The Story

Unique to the House of Krug, every Krug Vintage is crafted to be different, to reveal the expression of a particular year. A year with character, a year with a special story to tell in a way that Krug alone can relate. To narrate this story, Krug has blended very expressive wines from a single year, enhanced by a stay of over ten years in the cellars. Krug Vintage is the story of a year as seen by Krug; there are as many stories as there are Krug Vintages.

Wine Information

Vintage Krugs are classics that leave room for the special characteristics of each year. The Collection series gives old vintages, stored in perfect conditions, a new life in the hands of collectors. Launched in late 2010, the fabulously honeyed 1989 is now at a perfect age for enjoyment. Krug resisted producing rosés for a long time, but the Krug Rosé NV, produced since the mid-1980s, is an enchanting addition to the Krug series with its vinous baked quality.

Vintage 1976

This sunny and hot drought year with record heat levels across Europe led to a very early harvest, which began on September 1st. Large yields (averaging 10,359 kg/ha) of super ripe fruit produced rich and powerful champagnes, although relatively low in acidity (averaging 7.2 g/l). The acidity levels made some winemakers doubt the wines' longevity but this has since been proven wrong by a multitude of majestic 1976 Champagnes defying time. The style is unashamedly ripe, big and even fatty with plush fruitiness. By no means ‘classic' in style but nevertheless great and a forefather to the warm vintages we are experiencing now. Bollinger R.D. 1976 from magnum for example, is something to behold. Other magnificent cuvées include Philipponnat Clos des Goisses, Dom Pérignon Brut and P3, Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque, Piper-Heidsieck Rare and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne.

Written Notes

Bad Boy led things off with an original bottle of 1976 Krug. It was wheaty with white fruits, along with honey and caramel. Its palate was solid, lean and elegant with nice orange zip and a smooth, soft finish (94).

Good looking normal size bottle, in an excellent condition and level is 2cm ullage below the cork. Colour is gold, and looking bright, clear and deep. On the nose it is pure, fresh, seductive and ripe. The taste is full, fresh, fragrant, fat, refined, elegant, fruity, with balanced and multi-dimensional structure. On the palate it is layered and has vanilla, perfumed, herbs, honey, tropical fruits, steely, mineral, citrus and white fruits flavours. The finish is long, gentle, round, lingering and pure. This wine is sophisticated, transparent and outstanding. I paid around 1k-3k€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 1-5 years and decant at least 15min before tasting. Good value for money.

Krug Vintage 1976 Takes some time to open up but when it does it really delivers the good with a very intense and complex nose of butter, coffee, caramel, lush ripe fruit, apples, stone fruit, sweet spices, apricot jam, dried orange peel and dried red berries. Killer nose! Full bodied, rich and smooth palate with flavors that mirrors the nose with coffee, caramel, roasted nuts, butter and ripe apples, peaches, apricot jam and dried orange peel. All held in check by a perfect, vibrant acidity that tightens up on the finish, making it very very long and gives it a refreshing, youthful feel. Approaching full maturity. Fantastic and flawless. Drink now-2028 97p.
