When we create a blend for a new Krug Vintage, we want to tell the story of the year – of what surprised and enchanted us. In 2006, all three Champagne grapes showed beautiful indulgence and maturity across our selected plots. It was a year for elegant and balanced Meuniers evocative of pears and apples. The Chardonnays were classic with ample aromas, while the Pinot Noirs of the Marne revealed promising structure and great potential.

The year 2006 was considered a hot one in Champagne, with extreme highs and 23 days recorded over 30°C. It was a capricious climate that went from dry periods to intense rainfall - in August, 2 months of rain fell in only 2 weeks. Fortunately, the sun returned to complete the ripening period shining on a beautiful harvest. Grapes had a balance close to that of 2002 and 1989, which were also beautiful and generous years.

For Krug, the year 2006 gave birth to a great and classic Krug Champagne. Krug 2006 is generous, intense in aromas on the palette, without any excess, with an ending leaving a sensation of greatness and distinction.

For the final blend, the selected wines were those best exhibiting the unique, silky roundness of the year with a good structure and length. Pinot Noir constitutes almost half (48%) of the blend, with the majority coming from plots in Montagne de Reims Nord, Sud and Les Riceys. Ripe and full-bodied Chardonnays (35%) add roundness and opulence while Meuniers (17%) from Leuvrigny and Sainte-Gemme bring tension and length.

The generous aromatic and expressive profile of Krug 2006 comes after 12 years in the cellars, gaining in balance and finesse.

The Story

Unique to the House of Krug, every Krug Vintage is crafted to be different, to reveal the expression of a particular year. A year with character, a year with a special story to tell in a way that Krug alone can relate. To narrate this story, Krug has blended very expressive wines from a single year, enhanced by a stay of over ten years in the cellars. Krug Vintage is the story of a year as seen by Krug; there are as many stories as there are Krug Vintages.

Wine Information

"At first sight, the intense golden colour promises round generosity. A very expressive and indulgent nose reveals yellow and dried fruit, toasted almonds, hazelnut, maple syrup, meringue and mandarin liqueur. On the palate it is generous, deep, ample and fresh with aromatic persistence and a long finish. It has notes of nougat, frangipane, pastry, tarte tatin, plenty of citrus with a beautiful finish on pink grapefruit skin."

Product of an exceptional vintage, the Krug Vintage 2006 truly embodies the essence of the year 2006 in Champagne.

This champagne was blended from a selection of the most expressive wines of the 2006 vintage. After 12 years spent ageing in the cellars of the House of Krug, the Champagne Krug Vintage 2006 finally received its cork in the winter of 2017- 2018 and was released, for the first time, into the light.

A tribute to this fantastic 2006 vintage, the Champagne Krug Vintage 2006 transcribes the true character of each vineyard and parcel included in its blend, yielding an intense, generous and elegant champagne that is simultaneously well-rounded and delicious. A truly gourmet champagne, the Krug Vintage 2006 is a feat of virtuosity, the perfect pairing to the most flavourful dishes and a variety of cooking styles. From stewed dishes like tagines or ratatouille, to noble meats and game, to foie gras, the Champagne Krug Vintage 2006 is sure to serve as a dignified centrepiece to even the most beautiful tables.

Vintage 2006

A cold winter and springtime frosts laid the foundations for this vintage of abundant yields (12,997 kg/ha). Uneventful flowering was followed by exceptionally hot and sunny weather, which lasted until August. A dank August left producers fearful but fortunately warm, bright conditions in September redressed the balance. Harvest commenced on September 9th, producing grapes high in sugar level but notably low on acidity. The general health of the grapes was sufficient, producing wines which excel over the preceding 2005 vintage, another warm and ample year. The year's greatest wines are supple and expressive and despite the richness they escape being overly heavy. Overt and welcoming upon launch, the best come with excellent capacity for ageing. Winey, and richly fruity characters, most Champagnes regrettably miss some tension and finesse. Wines of the vintage include Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, Krug Vintage and Dom Pérignon Rosé.

Written Notes

“The deep golden coloured hue speaks of a warm vintage’s wine. Already the nose reveals a big character with great presence. The toast and dried fruit lead nose comes with no shyness but bold yet finely integrated oaky touches and spicy complexity. On the palate the sweet vanilla tones turn towards honey with nutty notes persisting on the long, intense after taste. The Pinot Noir prominent palate is generous and supple but stylishly refreshed by a fine, brisk acidic backbone. Beautifully textured and seductive and finishing with a nice bite of crispness and minerality. It has come around early but there is structure and intensity to support great ageing.”

Krug 2006 Vintage is bright, tense and full of energy. Lemon confit, pastry, chamomile, dried flowers and tangerine oil all race out of the glass. The breadth of the Pinot comes through on the mid-palate and finish, as the 2006 gains power and resonance with a bit of aeration. Light tropical inflections, along with hints of almond and spice, open up later, adding further shades of nuance. Although it has just been released, the 2006 is unusually open and a real pleasure to taste today. In most vintages, Krug demands cellaring, but in the 2006 readers will find a Krug Vintage that is superb, even in the early going.

This is a very deep and layered vintage Champagne with a round, ample mouth feel. It’s full-bodied with lots of cooked apple and mirabelle, as well as biscuit undertones. Hints of stone and flint. It’s flavorful. Delicious now and will age beautifully. Drink or hold.

ID 118014. To be released in October 2019. (With potential stress because the 2019 harvest is likely to be so late.) Saved by a fine August. This was assistant winemaker Julie Cavil’s first tasting of the still base wines and is therefore her first known vintage on the market! Chef de Caves Eric Lebel was ill that summer. Outstanding Pinot Noir.
Quite rich and polished. No hint of astringency. But zesty on top and with lots of undertow. (I’ve never heard anyone say of a Krug vintage that it shouldn’t have been released.) Long with a particularly rich finish.

Tasted blind wine 3. Some colour evolution here, very fine bubbles, attractive sweetness coming through on the nose, red fruits, the palate is a little tight again, with quite a drying finish, thus is youthful still, getting that Szechuan again, limey. Good tension but lacking personality just now. 92/100

Inside Information

"A stunner, with mouthwatering vibrancy and focus married to all of the opulence of a great 2006 Champagne. Richly fragrant, offering nutmeg, cardamom, jasmine, lemongrass, espresso and grilled nut notes enmeshed in a core of black currant and tangerine fruit flavors. Beautifully creamy and complex, this glides across the palate on the long, lasting finish."

Wine Spectator 2020

RATING:  97/100

"Krug 2006 is composed of 45% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier and shows an impressive aromatic richness of white flowers, smoke and toasted hazelnuts. There’s both density and crystalline texture here, with a vinous palate that's deep and complex too. Readers who can find it should not hesitate, as it's a superb Champagne."
