The Story

Like all second-label wines, La Chapelle is the little brother of the flagship wine produced on the same estate, Château La Mission Haut-Brion.

It is made from grapes grown in the same vineyard, it is raised in the same manner and benefits from the same level of care. In truth, it presents all the qualities of the estate's top wine on a reduced scale. Every effort is brought to bear to give the wine a similar harmony and to impart the same aromas.
Beginning with the 2006 vintage, the blending process used to create La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion has involved the contribution of grapes produced on the former parcels of Château La Tour Haut-Brion.

In wine tasting notes, we have noticed that the word that is ultimately the most important is rarely mentioned. That word is pleasure. We would undoubtedly use it if we were to define this wine that will charm all your senses so. By now you probably have guessed: this "junior" Château La Mission Haut-Brion has all the alluring qualities of its big brother.

Length of initial maturing period in oak casks: 18-22 months in 20-25% new wood

Average production: 4,000 cases

Vintage 2020

In Bordeaux, the heat led to early flowering. Additionally, this led to an early harvest after a very hot summer. As a starting point, there is great maturity in the grapes, and we can expect a more opulent vintage than in recent years.

This year's summer was the hottest since 1959, but the rain fell at just the right time during the growing season. The harvest took place two weeks before the norm and will produce grapes with high alcohol potential and the lowest acidity since the 2003 vintage. As they say in Bordeaux: “It was a good and extreme growing season which , hopefully, also produces great wines.”

Written Notes

Tasted in May 2021 Splendid nose of aromatic blackcurrants, grilled bacon, luscious berries, mineral, grained tannin on the palate, strong backbone, good complexity and persistent finish. Excellent second wine of La Mission Haut Brion.

  • 92p

Dark purple colour with violet hue and almost black core. Very refined nose with aroma reminiscent of dark berries, blackcurrants and mulberries, mild spices, hints of Kampot pepper and graphite. On the palate well structured with ripe yet firm tannins, elegant fruit and discreet spiciness. A wine with slightly closed character but promising potential and convincing length.
