Qualified as "miracle champagne ", the year 2012 will be remembered in Champagne. After various climatic vagaries that put the vineyard to a severe test, the magnificent month of August came to announce a harvest beyond expectations with sweet grapes, good acidity and a good phenolic potential. These indicators left no doubt as to the omen of the birth of a very great year similar to the 19661989 or 2002vintages.

For Benoît Gouez, this Champagne Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage 2012 "evokes the transition from spring to summer. It offers a certain sweetness, accompanied by freshness and serenity. "A very great vintage Champagne that testifies to the know-how and excellence of the Moët & Chandon house, handed down since 1743.

Wine Information

2012 is our 74th Grand Vintage; and is exceptional in its maturity, complexity and charisma.

The 2012 Grand Vintage evokes the transition from spring to summer. It offers superb harmony, accompanied by softness and freshness.

Blend: This vintage’s red grape varieties were particularly good, especially the Meunier, which explains their dominant proportion in the blend. For once, the Chardonnay stays slightly in the background :Chardonnay 41%, Pinot Noir 33% and Pinot Meunier 26%

Ageing in cellars: at least 5 years

Ageing after disgorging: at least 6 months

Dosage: 5g/litre

Tasting notes: A shimmering color of bright, pale yellow with glints of green, and fine, persistent bubbles. A bouquet characterized by freshness: Initial notes of fresh white flowers evolve towards sweet, fragrant pastries, with occasional scents of fresh walnuts, hazelnuts and biscuits. In parallel, the fruit is crisp, freshly ripened, with aromas of pear, white peach and nectarine. The attack is soft, supple and fluid. The palate then develops texture, with a softness like cashmere or felt. This initial softness gradually reveals a purity, the crisp structure lengthens, lingering, to offer an iodized, tangy finish, underscored by a mouthwatering hint of grapefruit.

Vintage 2012

2012 was deemed one of the best vintages the Champagne region has ever experienced. “The quality and the intensity are definitely there to make an outstanding vintage,” Dom Perignon chef de cave Richard Geoffroy told Decanter. The base wines show a lovely richness as well as the acidity needed to make outstanding and long-lived Champagnes. Yields are very low, in some places half of the allowed production.

Written Notes

Bright, pale yellow, with green reflections and a fine, persistent bead.

The nose hints of fresh white flowers, which develop into aromas of sweet pastry, walnuts and hazelnuts, then ripe pear, white peach and nectarine.

A supple and soft-textured champagne, its initial sweetness gives way to a more structured acidity. A persistent finish reveals a hint of iodine underscored by a zesty note of pink grapefruit.
