The Tb points given to this wine are the world’s most valid and most up-to-date evaluation of the quality of the wine. Tastingbook points are formed by the Tastingbook algorithm which takes into account the wine ratings of the world's best-known professional wine critics, wine ratings by thousands of tastingbook’s professionals and users, the generally recognised vintage quality and reputation of the vineyard and winery. Wine needs at least five professional ratings to get the Tb score. Tastingbook.com is the world's largest wine information service which is an unbiased, non-commercial and free for everyone.

The Story

As always this 100% single-quinta wine is drawn from Noval’s own vines. There are three core parcels, all near the winery—the terraces directly surrounding the winery in Pinhão, the vines in the Roncão Valley and a parcel overlooking the Douro River.  Each year, the blending proportions for the Vintage Port will vary depending on the vagaries of the vineyard.

THE SUPREME EXPRESSION OF THE TERROIR OF QUINTA DO NOVAL

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is characterised by its purity of fruit and a fine, delicate quality that is typical of the wines of the property in general, but which finds its most remarkable and enduring expression in the Vintage Ports. Equilibrium, harmony, finesse and elegance characterise our great Vintage Ports, which are declared only when we are certain that the year has produced a blend, however small, that is worthy of bearing the name of Quinta do Noval Vintage Port.

Noval follows its own path in its approach to Vintage Port. If we believe that we have wines of the quality and personality to join the ranks of the Quinta do Noval Vintage Ports of previous years, we will bottle it and declare it, even if this means declaring several years in a row, and even if it means, as is often the case, bottling only a few hundred cases of Quinta do Noval Vintage Port, representing a tiny percentage of the total production of the Quinta.

Of course, in very great years, when there is unanimity among Port producers, and a General Declaration results, Quinta do Noval will declare its wine also, and perhaps with a little more wine than usual. But whatever the year, the standards of selection in the Noval tasting room are extremely rigorous, and even in the more generous years volumes of our Vintage Ports are always extremely small: at the very most, less than 20% of the production of our great vineyard terroir.

Written Notes

The 1931 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port has a deep brown/tawny core with amber/brick rim. A simply stunning nose: the definition hitting you first and then the freshness followed by incredible complexity with scents of coca, brown sugar, candied red-berried fruits and a hint of cloves and cinnamon. It is a penetrating scent that is difficult to describe. The palate is rich, beautifully poised with good acidity: very powerful and intense with a slight rancio character on the mid-palate. There are notes of raisin, spice and liquorice all with otherworldly length. It continues to blossom after a couple of hours in the glass and becomes more rounded, utterly elegant with a sweet, brown sugar finish. Its structure suggests that it has more years ahead. Tasted at Fine Wine Experience's Noval/Naçional vertical.

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 1931 / 98 points / A healthy, dark looking dark ruby colour. Massive and intense wine with sweet concentrated flavours of prunes, figs and chocolate. The best in this wine was its elegance and faultless mouthful, which was decadently silky and rich. Very ample and smooth wine, almost as great as the perfect 1931 Nacional, which merely has a slightly better balance and complexity, but they both share the same very long and lingering finish. At 85 years of age, this port is at its peak now, but should easily live on for at least two decades more. A genuinely classic and rare Noval.
