Wine Information

Little wonder our Coonawarra vineyard produces such magnificent reds. There are no stunning views here. No meandering rivers, no rolling hills. At first glance, Coonawarra appears featureless. Until you look down. That red soil is the famous 'terra rossa'. It is every winemaker's dream. The wines it produces are peerless. You will never forget your first.

The legend of the Brand's Laira vineyard dates back to 1893. It was the year that Captain Stentiford an English sea captain took up a 28 hectare vineyard in the heart of the legendary terra rossa strip of Coonawarra.

This vineyard was part of the original Coonawarra fruit colony and Stentiford named the property 'Laira' after an old square rigged ship trading around the coasts of Australia and New Zealand.

The property was acquired in 1950 by Eric Brand and his wife Nancy. In 1966 Eric and his family established Brand's winery becoming the first small winemaker of Coonawarra. The family produced wine until 1994 when the winery was purchased by McWilliams Wines, laying the foundations of winemaking excellence that have continued into the into the next century.

Brand's Laira Coonawarra continues the traditions of the past by producing premium quality award winning wines from Australia's most recognised wine region.

Brand's Laira Coonawarra offers a unique tasting experience. Guest's can immerse themselves in the ambiance of cellar door, tasting our range of premium estate grown wine. Vintage 2009

Near-optimum rainfall over winter, followed by dry, mild conditions over spring provided a good environment for budburst and an ideal start to the growing season with canopies developing well. Climatic conditions favoured flowering and set with mild and calm weather, however there was some shatter in Shiraz across parts of the state resulting in small crops for many regions. Some early to mid-December summer rainfall was followed by conditions drying up very quickly and continuing until the end of February. Summer was hot with some extreme heat but cool conditions returned in February and March, allowing the fruit to ripen across a long harvest with balanced acidities and excellent tannin ripeness. An elegant, yet still powerful follow up to the conditions brought about in the preceding 2008 vintage

Written Notes

Colour of youthful reds, crimson. Such an impressive wine. Loved it. Blackfruits, chocolate, obviously a high percentage of Cabernet (more than I realised, when revealed). Has moved passed the primary fruits stage and into some very attractive complexity. A real richness of flavour – smoked meats, roasted meats. Seamless wine. Very fine tannins at the conclusion. Impressive length. This has rather a formal, four-square structure, but certainly nothing untoward for a good Cab. Wonderful Coonawarra Cabernet. No surprise to later learn that it picked up the trophy for Best Cabernet at the Adelaide Show last year. It was pipped for Best Red and Best Wine by another McWilliam's wine, their 2008 '1877 Shiraz Cabernet' – which was also in this competition and, although it also showed very well on the day, on this occasion, it fell a smidge short of the '171'.
