Jeff Leve / BWW2024 Finalist, Wine Writer (United States)  had a tasting of  18 Wines  from  11 Producers

The Best 40 wines tasted in 2023 Part II, exclusively for readers of Tasting Book. It has been quite a year, with far more ups than downs, especially when it comes to wine. I am lucky as well as blessed to be able to taste older, mature wines, as well as young wines and barrel samples, all of which allows me a fun look at a myriad of different wines at all ages and stages of maturity.

By ratings, these are a look at the 40 best wines tasted, so far. I have two more special nights coming up, but as we already closing in on the second week of December, this is a good snapshot of the best wines from 2023.  I hope you have at least half as much read it, as I did tasting them.

Pekka Nuikki / Editor of the Fine Wine Magazines and Champagne Magazine, Wine Writer (Finland)  had a tasting of  22 Wines  from  12 Producers

Tastingbook had a very interesting Bordeaux tasting. We compared the best vintages of the 1990s with the vintages of the 2010s. The basic essence of the wines had remained recognizable, but e.g. the alcohol percentage and structure are very different in the wines of the 2010s than in the 1990s. Everyone can decide for themselves whether it has gone in a better direction, but this tasting alone showed that Bordeaux today produces even higher-quality wines with a wide spectrum, which are also enjoyable almost as soon as they hit the market.

Izak Litwar / BWW2024 Finalist, Wine Writer (Denmark)  had a tasting of  19 Wines  from  19 Producers

Château Grand Puy Lacoste 2022 – is characterized by crunchy cherries and blackcurrants on the nose, with hints of leather and cigar box. It has a juicy and vibrant taste, firm structure, and strong backbone, leading to a great mid-palate. The wine offers subtle complexity and a meaty finish. It is excellent stuff and deserves a rating of 96 points.

Peter Moser / BWW2024 Finalist, Wine Writer (Austria)  had a tasting of  16 Wines  from  7 Producers

Prager Grüner Veltliner Wachau DAC Ried Zwerithaler Kammergut Smaragd 2022 / Light greenish yellow, silver reflections. Fine savoury, delicate nuances of anise, tobacco notes, delicate yellow fruit, a touch of mango and honey blossom. Full-bodied, juicy white apple fruit, well-integrated, silky acidity structure, finesse and long persistence, saline finish, lingers for minutes, Veltliner at its best. 99-100 points

Huon Hooke / BWW2024 Finalist, Wine Writer (Australia)  had a tasting of  10 Wines  from  7 Producers

Henschke Hill of Grace 2016 / Deep ruby-red colour with a trace of purple. The bouquet is multi-faceted and beguiling in its mellow complexities, invoking earthy, humus, undergrowth, dried herbs and ironstone, blackberry and licorice aromas with a hint of mocha, the same flavours appearing on the palate, which is tremendously concentrated and powerful, without loss of its essential elegance. A miraculous wine of concentration and balance. A powerful vintage of this wine. 98 points

Juha Lihtonen / The Best Scandinavian Sommelier 2003, Pro (Finland)  had a tasting of  13 Wines  from  10 Producers

Such an eye-opening Bordeaux tasting with flights of two wines partly from different eras and partly from the same vintages from 1982-2015.

The flight pairs gave an exciting reflection of how the wine making has changed during the past decades. Although it is because of modern equipment, better knowhow, new techniques in winemaking and vineyard management, the climate change must play a big role in equation. It is due to this that the top Bordeaux wines have more and more in common with the premium Napa reds such as Blankiet Rive Droite 2021 that we had as a parallel wine from Napa Valley in this tasting.

Jeannie Cho Lee MW/ BWW2024 Finalist, Wine Writer (South Korea)  had a tasting of  22 Wines  from  19 Producers

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Romanee-Conti Grand Cru 2016 /
An expressive Romanee-Conti with great exuberance, intensity and complexity. This is a brilliant vintage for DRC and the Romanee-Conti in this vintage is suprisingly open at this stage. The wine combines everything one would want in a great Burgundy wine – delicacy, purity, depth, complexity, length and seductive flavors. 99 points

Essi Avellan MW / BWW2024 Finalist, Wine Writer (Finland)  had a tasting of  27 Wines  from  6 Producers

Dom Pérignon Oenothèque 1990 / Big, ripe expression with gingerbread, roasted hazelnuts, straw, green apple and sea notes, complemented by gunpowdery complexity. Broad, almost oily textured yet fresh palate, with the softest mousse. Mature but healthy and fruity. Disgorged 2007.

Raffaele Vecchione / winescritic.com, Pro (Italy)  had a tasting of  29 Wines  from  24 Producers

Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is assuredly a vintage that will be remembered over the years thanks to the perfect amalgam of technological and phenolic maturity  and the sheer quantity of grapes the producers took to the winery.

This extraordinary year,  at a historically difficult time, which raised many doubts about climate change and the seasonal trends it brings, arrived like Manna from heaven for National and International producers and wine merchants.

The waiting was over, Brunello di Montalcino finally signed its name on the register and it did it in grand style.

Andreas Larsson / Best Sommelier in the World 2004, Pro (Sweden)  had a tasting of  11 Wines  from  6 Producers

Dom Pérignon 2003 P2 / Medium deep golden colour with rather small and vivid bubbles. Pure and intense nose, fine development without oxidation, roasted pine and pistachio nuts with confit de citron, fresh peach and brioche notes. The palate is ample and rather opulent with a rounded acidity yet with a nice fresh bite from fine extract, mild creaminess, nice layers of finely spicy yellow fruit, nougat and nutty flavours with a long and embracing finish. 95p

John Kapon / CEO / Ackerr Merrall & Condit, Pro (United States)  had a tasting of  23 Wines  from  9 Producers

The 1966 Heitz Vineyard Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was an epic bottle, a testament to the heights that Napa can achieve, pun intended!  There was a minty and sexy nose that seeped caramel and eucalyptus.  There was this great herbal complexity that was so expressive.  Insane expression!  ‘So good’ was written over and over in my notes.  The palate was creamy, long and smooth with tasty and fresh caramel flavors.  Divine stuff (98).

Juha Lihtonen / The Best Scandinavian Sommelier 2003, Pro (Finland)  had a tasting of  20 Wines  from  20 Producers

Great wine dinner with 2 Michelin star chef Eero Vottonen. The stars of the flights were Taittinger Comtes de Champagne 2008 (98+p), Château Palmer 1996 (97p) and Blankiet Estate 2018 (97p).

Sharing. We believe that the most important property of wine can be crystallised into one concept: sharing. It is an integral part of the wine world on every level from production and tasting to travel and the moments of enjoyment. It can be said that the need to share is inherent to wine, as a product, and for the first time, there is now an organic channel - Tastingbook, a community of wine professionals around the world, to do just that – sharing the experiences and knowledge .

Knowledge is power. Each year, almost 30 billion wines are tasted across the world. Information on wine-related matters is posted on millions of websites by wine shops, vineyards, wine experts and enthusiasts. There has been no source that provides reliable, non-commercial, unbiased and up-to-date information on wine in a single location created by thousands of wine professionals, until now.
