100 points Decanter / Tasted with winemaker Cory Empting and director of winegrowing Bob Levy at Harlan Estate. Fresh and approachable, with the elegance and structural integrity to last four or five decades, possibly longer. On the nose, beautiful upfront savouriness reveals cassis notes, cigar box and black olive followed by ripe, fresh black and blue fruit. Mesmerizing depth of flavours, with beautiful creamy black and red berries and a deep vein of earthy minerality. Tannins are angular with impressive grip, while acids are firm and refreshing. The finish is offers nuanced black currants, dark chocolate, enticing tobacco and cedar. (JC)

The Story
With the founding of Harlan Estate in 1984, we embarked upon our mission of creating a “first growth” of California. The estate’s early vineyard development began with just six acres. Today our planting is essentially complete, with nearly forty acres under vine to the classic varietals: cabernet sauvignon (70%), merlot (20%), cabernet franc (8%), and petit verdot (2%). Invariably, the finished wine is predominately cabernet sauvignon, which we blend with varying amounts of the other three varietals as we seek to express faithfully the unique and distinctive character of the site.
Modest quantities of wine were produced in 1987, 1988, and 1989 from grapes that represented the second, third, and fourth leaf of our estate vineyard. In each of those years a small number of barrels were produced in the hope of gaining a prescient glimpse into what the character of the land—never before cultivated—might have to offer. The wines were blended, bottled, and labeled with a special designation. Though charming in their own way, these first wines fell short of our standards and aspirations, so were never released. They continue to serve as humble reminders of where we began the journey.

Winemaker Notes: “The character of Harlan Estate is defined by its confidence and grace—a duality that arises from our woodlands in the western hills of Oakville. With the 2019 vintage, both aromatic complexity and textural harmony seem to reach a new plateau. The nose embraces a depth with dark fruit and hints of the surrounding forest—notably, bay laurel, wild mint, and fresh earth. The wine unfolds with detail and flesh, yet maintains tension in the form of fresh and vibrant acidity. This acidity, perceived as savory minerality, permeates easily through the wine’s significant density. The tannins, though present, are braided finely with ripe cords of generosity, creating a fluid persistence and perpetual resonance.“
