The year 1998 was marked by two unusual and opposing occurrences: the spectacular burning of the grapes caused by record high temperatures in August followed by exceptional rainfall in September.

The First Plénitude of Dom Pérignon Vintage 1998 (released in 2005) was a model of balance.
In its Second Plénitude, invigorated by the additional years in the cellars, Dom Pérignon P2 1998 transcends the potential of the vintage.

The dark, mineral, iodine, spiced singularity of Dom Pérignon vibrates higher and clearer than ever.

The Story

The uniqueness of Dom Pérignon vintages lies in the way they evolve - not steadily in a linear way but through successive windows of expression. These privileged points in time are called “Plénitudes” - captured moments when the wine sings higher and stronger.

P2 is the Second Plénitude of Dom Pérignon Vintage, the result of 16 years of elaboration. The opposing and complementary elements of the assemblage resound for an increasingly sharp intensity. The energy of the wine is at its peak.

In 2014, Dom Perignon announced that it would be changing the name of its late-release Oenothèque series into a “P2” and “P3” offerings, referring to the second and third “plenitudes” of development in the evolution of a Champagne.

P2 offerings are fully matured, recently disgorged Champagnes that have been stored in the cellars where they were originally made.

“Dom Pérignon wines follow the rhythm of three plénitudes: the first after seven years maturing on their lees; the second between eleven and twenty years; and the third beyond twenty. In the darkness of our cellars, from one plénitude to the next, Dom Pérignon will grow and blossom, transmuting time into energy….The lineage of all the vintages in their third plénitude represents the living memory of Dom Pérignon, transmitting this heritage through generations of Chefs de Cave.” -Winemaker’s Notes

Vuosikerta 1998

This year's harvest is the largest the region has ever seen. Every corner of the appellation has managed to achieve the maximum authorized harvest yield of 10,400 kilos of grapes per hectare. Producers were also allowed to harvest an additional 2,600 kg which was allocated to the Champagne reserve, called blocking. This led to 330 million bottles of champagne being made in total. The lock-in system (which allows more production than necessary to meet demand) was the main tool for maintaining a stable price level in the 1990s.

The same wine as Oenothèque, but because it is a new name, the wine is slightly more autolytically from Moëts cellars. New name stands for plentitude step(phase) 2 of the three steps (phases) that Dom Pérignon, according to Richard Geoffroy, always achieves.’ RJ 95(96)

Fine, creamy nose, with coconut, peardrops, toffee and vegetal touches alongside gunpowder and straw. Strong body and developing character approaching maturity. Disgorged 2012.

“Richard Geoffroy calls this ‘athletic’ and is proud of having picked later than most. Released in 2014.
Delicate but very concentrated too. Round and rich. Quite opulent. Broad and muscular; meaty.
Drink 2014-2024”

  • 95p

Decadent and rich DP with so much pie crust, white truffle and dried apple and pineapple character. Limestone too. Full body, layered and flavorful. Lovely texture of fine bubbles. Very rich at the end but then turns fresh and vibrant. Contrast now between ripe fruit and fresh acidity.

  • 96p

On the nose the champagne has an intense, full and radiant bouquet with notes of honeysuckle, orange, toasted almonds and “hints of iodine sensations“.

It still has that creamy mouth feel on your palate for which Dom Pérignon is famous. But that signature chewiness is accompanied with a finish of smoky, biting and edgy, tingling energy in your mouth. I found it to be radiant and very pleasing to the nose and electric to the tastebuds. Geoffroy compares the leap from the current 2004 vintage to P2 with regular television “to HDTV, the lines are so much clearer, sharper and more penetrating.”

  • 96p
Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is green-yellow and light. On the nose it is intense, wide, complex, refined, charming and closed. The taste is fresh, harmonious, elegant, fragrant, refined, and dry, and high in acidity, medium-bodied, with perfectly balanced structure and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has mint, spice, citrus and creamy flavours. The finish is long, lingering, vibrant and pure. This wine is sophisticated and outstanding. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years.

Sisäpiiritietoa

Pairing caviar with Dom Pérignon is evident. The caviar underscores the precision, the depth, and the maturity of P2 1998's additional years of elaboration in the Dom Pérignon cellar. A substance that is both dark and luminous, black, it shines and becomes translucent. The caviar transfigures the energy of Dom Pérignon P2 1998.

The 1998 Dom Pérignon P2 is open and beautifully expressive today. Unusually open for a young P2, the 1998 drinks well upon release, especially compared to the 1996, which was virtually unapproachable for the first few years after release. That is not at all the case with the 1998, which is quite open at this stage. Hints of apricot, almond, white flowers and chamomile add texture on the fleshy, resonant finish. The added time on the lees has given the P2 an added dimension of texture. Drink 2016-2038.
