The Story

Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

Second, purchase wine that is at least 10 to 20 years old, because a young Pétrus is difficult to approach, besides which oak and tannins predominate in its taste. Young Pétrus may be impressive, but it ages fantastically and requires more time than any other Pomerol wine to reach its culmination. Finally, We would advise you to decant the wine with care and well in advance, and also to give it time to develop in the glass. Then you will have the opportunity to enjoy an unforgettable experience.

Little known 50 years ago, this château has seen the rise of a myth about the uniqueness of its wine. The wine’s inimatibility is due to many factors, first of all, an exceptional terroir - 40 meters above sea level, the highest point of the appellation - with a layer of heavy clay soil and an iron subsoil. These are ideal conditions for the expression of the Merlot grape. With such a special terroir, the approach in the vineyard and cellar is traditional and respectful.

The work done in the vineyard is fastidious - severe pruning in the winter, regular ploughing, crop-thinning, de-leafing, manicuring the clusters in the summer - and allows the perfect ripening of the fruit. The grape are manually harvested within two afternoons and sorted before crush.

Fermentation is carried out gently, without any overextraction, in temperature-controlled concrete tanks. The blend, very often pure Merlot, is defined in December and the young wine is aged in 100% new oak barrels.

This property made famous by Madame Edmond Loubat and then by Monsieur Jean-Pierre Moueix, culminates at 130 feet on the plateau of Pomerol. Ets Jean-Pierre Moueix is responsible for the cultivation, vinification and aging as well as the export distribution of Petrus wines.

The 2000 Petrus was the wine of the day so far, without a doubt. There was so much more concentration than anything else. There were lots of wows, oohs and aahs around the room. It was deep with big fruit, like this exotic sweet berry oatmeal that said good morning in the perfect way on the perfect day. It was long and sexy with a beefy edge, and the wine didn’t budge in the glass, holding its ground longer than I could keep it out of my mouth.

The 2000 Petrus is a monumental wine that on this occasion actually surpasses the 2001. The aromatics are absolutely stunning and incredibly intense with wild strawberry, underbrush, cedar and even a hint of pencil box, as if giving a discrete nod to the Left Bank (à la 1947). The palate is medium-bodied but then you notice the backbone of this otherworldly Pomerol, rendering it one of the most masculine over the last 20 years. It seems to stride across the senses; dense and almost broody towards the finish. This is clearly a long-term Petrus that will surely flourish with 20 or 30 years in the clock. How patient are you? Tasted at the Petrus dinner at the Épure restaurant in Hong Kong.

Mid-crimson with a pale rim. Very, very, vibrant crimson. Intense, ripe, and briary nose, but with great vigour, too. Very warm and spreads across the palate. Lots of tannin under the great, warm embrace of vigorous, yet very, very ripe, fruit. Quite severe finish. Extremely seductive and almost hides those pretty fierce tannins. Great warmth and weight underneath.

Young, concentrated and seamless. This vintage of Petrus goes beyond words - it is an experience that is profound and moving. One of the best vintages of Petrus from the 2000s, the palate is intense with layers of flavors that unfold on the palate and change in the glass over time. Find mocha, red plums, cocoa, vanilla beans and truffles that linger on the palate for a full minute. A beautifully poised, young Petrus that has yet to reach its peak and should easily age for 3 to 4 decades. A vintage that shows off Petrus' breeding and majestic style.

Like Lafleur, Pétrus is an astonishing example of 2000 vintage's heavenly quality. Merlot is simply outstandingly fantastic. Maybe Pétrus is barely so charismatic and monumental as Lafleur just now, but after 15-20 years, the difference between those two wines will be zeroed and Pétrus can match Lafleur at every level.

Sisäpiiritietoa

"A magical effort from Pétrus, the 2000 has continued to gain weight and stature. From the bottle, it is a perfect wine, much like the 1998. The color is inky plum/purple to the rim and the nose, which starts slowly, begins to roar after several minutes, offering up scents of smoke, blackberries, cherries, licorice, and an unmistakable truffle underbrush element. On the palate, this enormous effort is reminiscent of dry vintage port, with fabulous ripeness, a huge, unctuous texture, enormous body, and a colossal 65-second finish... Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #146 (Apr 2003)
