Salemi
Situated in the province of Trapani, in the heart of Valle del Belice, the lands of Salemi are characterised by hills mostly grown with Vineyards and olive trees that overlook a vast area of western Sicily. A unique territory that holds the record for the largest concentration of vineyards and that is particularly suited for growing white, fragrant grapes rich in personality such a Grillo, an ancient grape originally from the Marsala area that proves itself at high altitudes and in the vinification of wines like Tenuta Risignolo, one of the jewels of the Duca di Salaparuta winery. The fertile, clay rich lands beaten by very high temperatures represent a challenge overcome by the company that also produces Insolia in this region, a key grape for its iconic Bianca di Valguarnera.
Entroterra Palermitano
The lands surrounding Palermo, situated in North Wester Sicily, offer a less-known but no less stunning countryside made of green and fertile country land and hills, attentively cultivated by local farmers and an ideal setting to grow fine varieties of grapes. These lands are characterised by a mixed composition rich in clay and limestone and are defined by a mediterranean climate of hot summers and mild winters and good temperature variance making them ideal for growing Grecanico and Chardonnay grapes used in elegant wines such as Duca Brut.
Ribera & Cattolica
The softly southward-sloping highlands between Ribera and Cattolica extend all the way to the sea. The geographical position, favourable climate and good availability of water provided by the Verdura, Magazzolo and Platani rivers create a very fertile land that faces the warm African sea. Elegant patches of wild vegetation blend with golden wheat fields, and green olive trees rise up from the calcareous white soil and terraced vineyards that slope smoothly down towards the sea. The land, composed largely of a mix of limestone and sand, is warmed by a mild and dry climate during the summer. It is here that Insolia grapes are grown for the production of Colomba Platino, one of Duca di Salaparuta’s most treasured wines.
Entroterra Gela / Riesi
Soft hills and fertile plains form the landscape between Gela and Riesi in south eastern Sicily. Here the golden hues of the wheat alternates with the colours typical of the orchards and vineyards cultivated on soils rich in limestone and clay that are drenched in sun and warmed by an ideal climate for black berry grapes. Duca di Salaparuta selected the hills of Riesi for its Suor Marchesa Estate, an enchanting land where Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s most iconic grape, has been cultivated for centuries. The vineyards are grown on a white, loose soil chiefly composed of silicon and limestone that allows the vines’ roots to reach deep into the ground to find water, a precious and rare resource during the summer.
Provincia di Agrigento
The province of Agrigento, in South Western Sicily, is the heart of the Mediterranean sea. A place rich in history and tradition known for its archaeological site, the Valley of Temples. This world heritage site is famous for its Doric style temples dating back to the 5th century BC that offer testimony of the area’s rich history as a cultural and economic crossway since ancient times. The hills in the inner lands, composed of mixed soils favouring limestone and characterised by mild and dry weather, are ideal for the cultivation of high quality black grapes such as Frappato.
Gibellina e Calatafimi
Located in Western Sicily in the valley of Belice, the area that extends between Gibellina and Calatafimi is dotted by soft rolling hills covered in vineyards and olive tree groves. The soil in the area is composed of silicon and clay and the climate is mild in the winter, and hot and dry during the long summers. An ideal location for the development of grapes with persistent and elegant aromas distinguished by floral and citrus notes such as Insolia.
