Wine Information
Bolgheri, Italy – Tenuta dell’Ornellaia continues its history of excellence with the release of Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2009, the thirteenth vintage of the’ Second Vin’ of Ornellaia.
Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is a true ‘Second Vin’ of Ornellaia and offers the great experience of Tenuta dell’Ornellaia in a more informal style. Produced from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot coming primarily from the younger vineyards and made with the same scrupulous quality philosophy of the flagship wine. Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia was first introduced with vintage 1997, resulting from the decision to carry out an even more rigid selection during the blending phase of the base wines which give life to Ornellaia. The wine combines the pedigree of the flagship wine with freshness, accessibility and softness together with a structure, balance and intensity typical of the great terroir of the Estate.
Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2009 is the expression of a carefully crafted blend of 54% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc.
The vineyards face the Mediterranean Sea and are cared for with passion and dedication by the Estate's vineyard managers. The harvest is carried out exclusively by hand, with grape bunches individually inspected and selected on the sorting tables under the supervision of Leonardo Raspini, General Manager and Agronomist of Tenuta dell’Ornellaia. At this point winemaker Axel Heinz takes over the process and guides the technical staff in all phases of vinification, capturing the desired components to feature in the signature blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Once the blend is determined, time is called upon to make its contribution: Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia refines for 15 months in one year old barriques in order to improve the wine’s structure and to soften tannins.
“The warm and sunny 2009 vintage produced Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia – says Axel Heinz, Director of production and winemaker of Tenuta dell’Ornellaia -- with ripe, intense fruit and notes of spice. On the palate, this wine has a smooth, velvety mouth feel, with glossy tannins. A lively, crisp acidity contributes to the wine’s impressive balance and lengthy finish”. A true brother of the Bolgheri DOC Superiore Ornellaia, a wine that was ranked among the “Wine Legends” by the German Magazine Der Feinschmecker this March.
