At tasting, the Château Margaux 1986 shows off power and concentration at first. On the nose, the bouquet opens slowly as it grows older. The wine is both rich and balanced, similar to the 1961 vintage. It also boasts impressive breadth and richesse. The palate reveals tight, dense tannins, which slowly soften with time. The very fine summer weather was hardly affected by the brief spell of rain around 20th September, which in the end, may have been more beneficial than we first thought. Immediately afterwards, the fine weather came back and stayed with us for the whole of the harvest time, bringing the grapes to superb ripeness. (The picking began 1st October)
