McWilliam's, founded in 1877, is one of Australia's oldest and most respected family-owned wineries. The company has premium vineyards in Australia's most important growing regions, including the Riverina, Hunter Valley and Hilltops in New South Wales, Yarra Valley in Victoria and Coonawarra in South Australia.
Samuel McWilliam first planted grapevines in 1877 on the banks of the Murray River in New South Wales. More than 130 years later the McWilliam family is still producing high quality wines, represented by sixth generation family winemaker Scott McWilliam.
Like his father and grandfathers before him, Scott is turning unique Australian soil and climate conditions into extraordinary vintage wines and, in the process, establishing Australia as one of the world's premier winemaking centers. The Coonawarra today, for instance, enjoys a reputation that rivals the Bordeaux wine country in France.
Wine growing has now reached into every state and territory in Australia, with more than 45 distinct growing regions in several climatic zones. But it is in South Eastern Australia, with its Mediterranean climate, where many of Australia's fine wines are produced. With its seasons and climate the reverse of the United States, the south eastern reaches of Australia are the cooler areas suited to growing grapes for wine.
Because of its history, McWilliam's offers wine lovers and discoverers releases from the family's famous Hanwood Estate in New South Wales. Season after season, these wines combine the harvest from important vineyards in the Riverina, Coonawarra, Hunter Valley and Hilltops into award-winning vintages.
