Winemaker Notes
2016 was an idyllic harvest. We had much more rainfall here in Sonoma County than we had in the previous vintages, which led to a great growing season and a nice crop. Flavors were still high and crops were higher than last year but not too heavy.
Production Notes
For the first time, we took our 2016 Zinfandel from two different blocks on our ranch. Picked only two days apart, both blocks were hand-picked starting at 2 am and brought to the winery very cold. Each lot was destemmed but left whole berry and fermented in an open top tank. Each had a 5 day cold soak to pick up even more flavors from the skins before fermentation. After fermentation was done, we drained directly to barrels, using a mix of once used Francois Freres French oak barrels that had previously been used for new oak on our Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and neutral French oak barrels. The wine remained in barrel 22 months and was racked twice. It was bottled without fining or filtration.
