The 1862 Sercial has an attractive bouquet that does not quite match the engaging 1850 Verdelho; scents of grilled walnut and pine cones emerge but never really shift into fifth gear. The palate (again) has a tang of fish, or more precisely Thai fish oil, which I quite like, although it lacks the substance to keep its ferocious acidity in check. There is a fine tobacco and hazelnut finish, but I can’t help feeling that this is now past its peak.

This wine is pungent and fully aromatic, bringing forth articulate sweet fruit. This is a full-bore wine with a fruitier start and a fair amount of acidity before the wine rounds out. The sweetness seems separate from the wine leaving a sense of oddity. Despite the wood note the wine is simpler by the middle. ****

Slightly paler amber hue. Some nuts, orange peel, again a more tender style. High and very lively acidity, quite an elegant nerve to this one, superb texture, not quite as long as the 1875, but almost an equal. 95
