Terrazas de los Andes is the number one landowner in Vistalba, the world’s top Malbec district. We also own other vineyards in the Mendoza region (Tupungato, and Perdriel) and in Cafayate (Salta region), known for producing the best Torrontés in the world.
NORTHERN REGION
LOS AROMOS
In rocky Los Aromos, south of the Mendoza river in the Lujan de Cuyo district, you’ll find our richly aromatic Cabernet vines, enjoying the best conditions for the variety.
Cool, dry weather, mountain breezes, and the soil’s natural characteristics: everything the grapes need to yield a fruity, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon.
LAS COMPUERTAS
Our La Compuertas vineyard is located a stone’s throw from the northern end of the Mendoza river. The property has very deep soil, down to nearly 1.8 metres in places, though part of the property is close to a hilly area where the soil is shallower and somewhat rocky.
Ungrafted Malbec vines planted in 1929 enjoy an abundant source of clean, run-off water from the river and a longer ripening season thanks to the region’s cooler temperatures. Over the years, this vineyard has used a Guyot system with narrow rows and low trellises, irrigation provided by furrows running down the slope, a method used by the immigrants who started the industry in our province. This irrigation method brings silt and clay that retain moisture so less irrigation is used.
SOUTHERN REGION
CAICAYEN
Dedicated to Chardonnay, Tupungato lies at the heart of a valley with magnificent views of the just-there Andes. Shallow, sandy soil, and a dry climate are a haven for grapevines accustomed to growing at high altitudes.
With a 16°C difference between day and night during the summer growing months, the cold nights enable the grapes to lock in all the aromas and flavors the plants produce during the warm daylight hours.
LICAN
Lican vineyard is located in the district of Vista Flores in the Uco Valley at about 1250 meters. This region is known for being a cold region influenced by the cold winds from the Andes that run across the river, causing great temperature ranges.
The soil is very dry and highly permeable, forcing the plant to take roots deep in the search for clay and moisture. It is irrigated by means of drip irrigation system. This Malbec shows itself impetuous and powerful, structured and expressive with an unmistakable color and distinguishing mineral fresh notes.
EL PEDREGAL
This property is located in Altamira, an area with highly stony soil which gives the vineyard its name (piedra means stone in Spanish). Some of the boulders were so large when we moved onto the land, they had to be buried because they couldn’t be removed from the property.
The soil is highly permeable, all the better to nourish the Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec varieties grown here. Making use of high trellises and a cordon training system, the land is ideal, especially for Malbec, which expresses an intense, fruity colour with noticeable tannin.
LOS CASTAÑOS
This property has large chestnut trees, embellishing the landscape. Planted long ago, they are now a feature of the area.
The vineyard is homogenous, with an excellent, vigorous canopy planted with a cordon pruning system. The farm may be rather recent but produces a juicy, fruity Malbec full of character nonetheless.
EL YAIMA
This vineyard is located in Eugenio Bustos in San Carlos department, in the south of Mendoza Province. It is at an altitude of 1,080 metres / 3500 feet.
The name comes from the indigenous languages and means “big channel”, in reference to the irrigation channel that brings water to the vineyards. It has heterogeneous, sandy loam soil with rocks at various depths. All the vineyards use high trellises and drip irrigation.
