History

The “birth certificate“ of the Mandois vineyards dates back to 1735 when the family decided to acquire some vineyards in Champagne. At that time, Jean Mandois, a contemporary of Brother Oudart, possessed and worked a few plots of vines on the hillsides of Epernay. 1860 was a revolutionary year in the long family history. This was the year when Jean Mandois’ great-grandson, Victor Mandois, a visionary and trailblazer, took the decision that he would vinify and sell the wines of Champagne in Epernay.
Thanks to Victor’s passion for his craft, shared by the ensuing generations inspired by his work, Champagne Mandois is now available around the world and is reputed to be among the great Champagne Houses.

1735

Jean Mandois, a contemporary of Brother Oudart. The Mandois family lived in the Champagne region and owned vines in several prestigious terroirs. The long family history started with Jean (born 1968), Claude Paul (born 1735), Jean Claude (born 1769) and Louis François Auguste (born 1811).

1860

Victor Mandois (born 1842), a visionary and trailblazer, made and sold Champagne in Epernay.

1905

Auguste Mandois (born 1867) took the helm, moved the Champagne House to Pierry and bought the cellars and wine press it needed for its development.

1960

Sales reached 200,000 bottles. Henri Mandois (born 1908) made his mark on the company’s history by building the brand’s reputation and international sales.

1975

Michel Mandois (born 1933) further expand the vineyards, adapted the production facilities and ensured that the Champagne House remained independent.

2015

Two-thirds of the production is exported and the Champagne House is today overseen by Claude Mandois (born 1961). Representing the 9th generation since Jean Mandois, it is now his turn to safeguard the interests of the family shareholders. As an independent Champagne House, Mandois has the freedom to make the right decisions for the long term and is able to ensure the perennity of the style and quality of its Champagnes. Combining tradition and modernity, the Mandois family therefore remains faithful to the time-honored values of the Champagne Houses.

Vineyards

The village

Situated in Pierry, a village in "Côte des Blancs" classified 1st growth in Champagne, Mandois owns a 35 hectares' vineyard. The slopes of Epernay, the Côte des Blancs, together with the region around Sézanne constitute the major part of its vineyards spread amongst 12 different villages. Grapes come from famous villages and prestigious terroirs such as Chouilly, Vertus, Pierry and Epernay. Mandois's vineyard is made up of 70% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Meunier and 15% Pinot Noir.

Ploughing the soil

After many years experimenting in the Clos, Claude Mandois adopted the method of ploughing the soil in every other row of vines. In 2010, he decided to use this alternative method in all his vineyards. The results have been a deeper rooting of the vine and a natural expression of the terroir. To date Mandois Champagne is the only Champagne House to use this pioneering method.

Winemaking

Oak ageing

A proportion of our wines, including the Grands Crus, are aged in oak “Demi- Muids" (600 l barrels) in order to mature them as gently as possible. Our expertise, handed down from generation to generation since 1735, has defined the unique, individualistic style of our Champagnes, centred on finesse and elegance. Vineyards in a perfect location, grapes produced with the greatest of care, meticulous blending work and prolonged ageing are the foundations of our philosophy.

The oenothèque

To leave our mark on history for the generations to come, we have created a fabulous oenothèque (wine cellar) beneath the village church, which constitutes the treasure chest of our independent Champagne House.
