ICARIO

The ICARIO winery was founded in 1998  in the middle of the hills of Montepulcian. Since May 2015 the Rothenberger Family is owning and managing the estate with their team

The name of the winery and its logo are rooted deeply in the mythological past of the region. The point of origin here is an antique relief from Etruscan times, which shows a winged horse with a fishtail. On the other hand, the name ICARIO relates to an old Greek myth, in which Dyonysos – god of wine and fertility – revealed himself to a mortal man named Icarius and told him to spread the wine culture among humans.

Responsibility for future generations

Obligated to the future of ICARIO and the future generations, the Rothenberger Family continue to lead the winery value-oriented and for the purpose of a family business.

The careful handling with nature and the constant advancement of the wine production are as important to us as the openness towards changes and the associated progression.

In the end, we want to keep well-tried traditions, like mellow fermentation and the long maturing in wooden barrels, but we don’t want to refuse new ways of thinking in view of the future.

ICARIO wines should always have the best and highest quality on the market, they should always be characterized by their strong personality and stand for perfect enjoyment of wine with a finely nuanced aroma profile.

ICARIO unifies enjoyment of wine, “joie de vivre” and a place to meet, all at once. In addition, there is enough space for culture and music from the region of Montepulciano and the reflection of contemporary culture from all around the world.

The grapes of the individual lots can be separately fermented under best conditions and can be stored in cool modern underground cellars. Our business decisions are always – and in every step of the process – made under the aspect of quality.

At the moment, the ICARIO vineyards contain about 22 hectares and lie  about 450 to 550 meters above the sea level. Primarily grown is the important grape variety of Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese), which is the essential component of most Tuscan wines.

Environmentally friendly construction and materials like hand-broken nature quarrystones are the trademarks of the ICARIO architecture. In spite of its modernity, the winery is perfectly bedded into the landscape scenery and the season of conditional and unique natural spectacles.

The responsible architects of “Studio Valle Progettazione” – with the use of the natural fall of the landscape –  have considered avoiding negative influences on the growing of the wine through minimum mechanical operation. In addition, the layout of the Interior Design unmistakably shows the handwriting of the typical modern and tasteful Italian Styling.

In the individual rooms the puristic impression leaves enough space for the tasteful presentation of the ICARIO wines. Impressive art exhibits of international renowned artists, which are carefully selected by the Rothenberger Family, complete the overall picture and create an uniquely convincing atmosphere.
