History

You’ll know when it’s time to quietly lay aside the demands of the day. It’s a wonderful moment you’ll feel is well deserved. And one you’ll want to share. It’s the moment you have a glass of Kumala in hand. Our mellow reds, crisp whites and fruity rosés are full of character having been nurtured in the tranquil surroundings of Table Mountain in South Africa. You can virtually feel our love for this land and our passion for wine-making in every sip. So just as we make time to give our quality wines time to develop and soak up the warm South African sunshine, make time for Kumala. Make time for you.

Vineyards

Surrounding South Africa's legendary Table Mountain is a place of lush fertility and natural beauty. This is the home of Kumala, where we make quality wines that are full of character. It’s a place where you could be forgiven for thinking time stands still. We are lucky to call this place our home.

We are also fortunate enough to be able to source the best available fruits from Kumala growers dotted all over the five main regions of South Africa’s wine producing land. Our growers’ vineyards are located all over the Western Cape from Olifants River, through Paarl and Stellenbosch to Worcester.

Collaborating closely with our wine-making team, our growers quietly wait, watch and work the individual grape varietals to ensure they benefit from the right amount of sunshine and water before getting picked at the optimum time. After all, quality wine-making is something that just cannot be rushed.

Winemaking

If anyone knows the importance of time and wine, it’s our celebrated winemaker, Ben Jordaan. Talent, experience and enthusiasm are other key ingredients in the art of wine-making and fortunately for us, Ben has these in abundance. Along with a degree in viticulture and oenology from the University of Stellenbosch, Ben - or Bokkie as we like to call him - has travelled widely as a winemaker and gained a huge amount of experience working in many of the major wine-producing regions of the world.

He’s also a caring and devoted husband who likes nothing more than cooking a delicious meal for his wife and friends.

"I spend a lot of weekends having friends over. Like me, they can’t resist a thick marinated steak or fresh crayfish grilled on the ‘Braai’ or barbecue. I love serving it with a glass of Kumala Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz or Kumala Sauvignon Semillon. Perfect!"

Inside information

This magnificent winegrowing country includes fertile plains surrounding the breathtaking Table Mountain, with the sloped terrain and deep soils of Stellenbosch, through to the river valleys of the Klein Karoo. Climate and soil conditions vary – not just between regions, but between individual vineyards.

Collaborating closely with our winemaking team, our growers quietly wait, watch and work the individual grape varietals to ensure they benefit from the right amount of sunshine and water before getting picked at the optimum time. After all, quality winemaking is something that just cannot be rushed. These variations provide our winemakers with great opportunity to select the very best fruits to deliver the character you expect in our mellow reds, crisp whites and fruity rosés.
