History

Our inaugural release, Provenance Vineyards 1999 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon, established the winery's style: an elegant yet powerful richness with deep, intense flavors that reflect the vintage and vineyard. With the 2000 vintage we expanded our family of wines to include Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon and Napa Valley Merlot. Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc, our only white wine, made its debut with the 2003 vintage.

In August 2002 we acquired the winery known formerly as Chateau Beaucanon, located on Highway 29, for our home in the heart of the Rutherford appellation. After extensive remodeling and refurbishing of the property, we opened our tasting room, featuring a floor made of staves from our own oak barrels, in October 2003.

Vineyards

Vineyard George III
Our Rutherford Vineyard is located across the valley along the Silverado Trail. This historic vineyard is part of what was once Caymus Rancho, the Mexican land grant of George Yount. Yount arrived in 1836 and is belived to have been the first to plant winegrapes in the valley. A portion of the ranch became a wedding present to Thomas Rutherford when he married one of Yount’s granddaughters, Elizabeth.

Eventually the property was owned by the Archdioceses of San Francisco, which sold it in the early 1900s to French immigrant George de Latour, founder of Beaulieu Vineyard. He called the Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard he planted there BV No.3. Andy Beckstoffer purchased the property in 1988 and changed its name to Vineyard George III and replanted it with clones and rootstock carefully matched to its growing conditions.

The Rutherford appellation soil has excellent drainage and protection from the drying wind. The vines have deep, well-established roots. "They're mature vines that produce consistently great flavors -- no awkward adolescent phases where they vary from vintage to vintage," explains Winemaker Tom Rinaldi. Napa Valley's soil and climate are the reasons for Rutherford's preeminence: the area's loamy soils were formed by alluvial fans that have spilled out from the valley's surrounding mountains. The predictable heat and generally cloudless skies during the day matched with cooling fog in the late evening and early morning create an elegant richness, depth and density in the grapes. Our Cabernet Rutherford and our Estate Cabernet are crafted from this appellation.

The Estate Vineyard
Provenance Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc is produced primarily with estate-grown fruit from the Napa Valley vineyard surrounding the winery. Established in 2003, these 12 acres of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are planted in tightly spaced rows to limit vigor and concentrate fruit character. The vineyard is divided into eight blocks based on variations in rootstock and orientation; each block is picked and fermented separately to increase complexity.

Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard
This historic vineyard in the Oakville subappellation, just three miles south of Rutherford, was first planted in the 19th century and its wines have been winning awards since the Paris World’s Fair of 1889. Replanted in the mid-1990s with better clones, close vine spacing and a modern trellising system, this site is now producing the finest Cabernet Sauvignon in its fabled history. “To Kalon is a great expression of Cabernet Sauvignon: rich, structured and complex,” says Tom Rinaldi.

Similar to Rutherford, Oakville is an excellent Cabernet Sauvignon growing region. The alluvial fan deposits from the Mayacamas Mountain range produced gravely Bale Loams and Clay Loams soils, which allow excellent drainage. The area's level surface ensures even ripening on the vine. Located mid-valley, Oakville's climate has the best of upper and lower Napa Valley for vineyards. It's far enough north that it benefits from the valley's warm, long days of sunlight, while it's far enough south to be cooled at night by the ocean fog from the San Pablo Bay, which maintains the grapes' natural acidity and gives the grapes longer hangtime on the vines. Our To Kalon Cabernet (named after the vineyard) is from Oakville.

Three Palms Vineyard
Tom, who gained recognition for his Duckhorn Three Palms Vineyard Merlots beginning with the 1978 vintage, is excited to be reunited with this exceptional vineyard, located at the northern end of the Napa Valley in the proposed Calistoga subappellation. Three Palms Vineayard’s extremely rocky soils and its climate of hot-but not too hot-days and unusually cool nights produce uncommonly robust Merlot. Access to small amounts of Three Palms Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot for blending gives Tom and Chris the opportunity to craft a truly unique Three Palms Vineyard Merlot for Provenance.

Winemaking

Our goal is to showcase the distinctiveness of Napa Valley's best growing areas. Great wines start in the vineyard, so we've selected top vineyards and intervene as little as possible during the winemaking process. We gently guide the grapes into wine, striving to bring out the personality, complexity and uniqueness of each vineyard and vintage.

Provenance wines offer a balance of elegance and substance with deep, intense flavors that reflect the vineyards where the grapes were grown. We craft these age-worthy wines to be approachable upon release to the public.
