History

The ecosystem of Case Basse is a continuously evolving project. At Case Basse, Gianfranco Soldera renovates buildings, restoring the original architecture of Tuscan farmhouses and saving the dry-stone walls where birds, small mammals, insects, and so forth find shelter and a place to reproduce. For the same purpose, he places artificial nests to attract animals in the hope that they become permanent residents, and sets up beehives. He saves the ancient abandoned olive trees and plants other fruit trees. He is developing a plan for a botanical wood. He is building a man-made pond and small lake.

Signora Graziella, a keen botanist and landscape architect, searches the world over for antique roses to add to her much admired collection (such as the Noisette rose, "La Biche", which she found after more than two years).

Vineyards

The land, the vineyards and the wines are subject to continuous study by the agriculture faculties of various universities. An electronic switchboard constantly monitors climate changes over the course of the year, reporting temperature, humidity and quantity of rain. Daily controls during the wine-making stage are performed by the microbiology department of the University of Florence. The same faculty studies and controls all phases of the production cycle, monitoring the wine’s disposition until the moment of consumption.

Winemaking

Only Grapes  from the Case Basse Estate are used to make our wine. Natural fermentation is carried out in Slavonian oak vats. There is no temperature control and no artificial yeasts are added. Pumping over and frequent tastings are done. The University of Florence performs regular controls, also microbiological ones.

John Kapon / CEO / Ackerr Merrall & Condit, Pro (United States)  tasted  4 wines  from  Soldera . In a tasting of  31 wines

What can I say about the 1989 Haut Brion that I haven’t already said over and over again.  It, along with the 1989 Petrus, are the two greatest “young” wines I have ever had, and the youngest wines I would include in my ‘Top Ten’ lifetime category (I would let them share a spot lol).  This wine has been great every time I tasted it and has never shut down.  ‘Humdinger’ summed it up nicely (98+).

A Bad Boy Birthday Bash

Some people know how to do it right. The right ambience, the right company, the right food and of course, the right wine. I have been drinking with Bad Boy as long as I have been writing tasting notes, and I can safely say that he knows how to do it right. This past month he hosted over sixty wine lovers at his home in New Jersey for a spectacular celebration of wine and friends. The guest list was basically the Academy Awards for fine and rare wine in New York City, and Bad Boy unanimously took home Best Director and Best Picture.

The only problem with a Bad Boy production is the party factor, as in it turns into a great party, rather quickly. Some, like Mr. Vinous and Dapper Dave, stayed studious to the very end and compiled many more notes than I. I started strong, but in the end I am a drinker, so of the 130 bottles, 16 magnums and 2 jeroboams that were opened, I managed notes for approximately 30 wines. While I feel quite inadequate at the moment, I felt more than adequate throughout the night.

John Kapon / CEO / Ackerr Merrall & Condit, Pro (United States)  tasted  9 wines  from  Soldera . In a tasting of  28 wines

“This evening was really about Soldera.
As good as the 1978 DRC Richebourg and 1982 Krug Clos du Mesnil were, I will write first about the 1982 Soldera. This was a rare beast, and a good descriptor. Fresh, shy yet deep, this was a perfect bottle of aged Soldera, and its palate revealed red cherry, leather and that Soldera twang that makes it so unique. Fleshy and chewy, it left a vivid imprint on my palate and on my mind (97p).

Tuscany’s Greatest Wine
While the 1985 was off, the 1986 was another stunner, definitely in the outstanding category with its tasty, nutty character. The 1987 was deeper, darker and bigger, but its personality didn’t exude as much pleasure as the 1986. 1988 was another outstanding example, ‘rocking’ and consistent with its dusty, spicy, leathery and sandpapery qualities. There was great acidity in this ‘different experience.’ The 1993 was another theoretically lesser year that delivered above its weight class. It was rich and buttery, honeyed and delicious with signature profiles. ‘Burnt beans’ added to the usual twang. 1995 added egg yolks to the usual mix, arguably part of the usual twang. The 1999 was also solid, while the 2000 was one of the redder fruit wines of the family.
The 2001 was the only disappointing one, and the 2004 was just too young and too sweet at this point. The 1990 (97+) was a monster, a man amongst boys even by Soldera’s standards. It is arguably one of the greatest Italian wines made, ever. Got my Soldera paragraph in, I feel better now. That deserves its own article, but it is just one part of one night during this insane stretch, and about thirty notes are already missing!

I stayed in New York, and later that week we had another Acker Paulee, again in honor of the Tale of Two Cellars auction that would happen two days later. After thirty-two wines, I stumbled out of there in fine, Acker fashion.”
