History

Spier is one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa with a recorded history dating back to 1692.

While rooted in this heritage, Spier has a vibrant and conscious energy. Award-winning wine can be paired with fabulous food, grown either on the farm or by nearby farmers. The winery is one of the most awarded in the country and the four-star Spier Hotel and meeting facilities offer inspiring Winelands getaways in the tranquillity of nature.

Spier is not just a great destination, however. Our passion for quality and sustainability touches everything we do.

Our ethos – which we call the Spier Way – is the connecting thread: at Spier it is all about balance. We constantly strive to find innovative ways for our business to succeed in balance with our environment and society.

Leaving a light footprint

Spier aims to minimise the impact of our activities on the environment. Spier is a Champion member of the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI), organically certified and follows the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) criteria. In 2011, Condé Nast Traveler World Saver Award recognised the estate as the top international destination ‘Doing it All’.

Spier’s environmental and social initiatives are many and varied, and include ways to reduce water usage. 100% of our wastewater and over 80% of our solid waste is recycled.

Supporting our communities

Wherever possible, we look for ways to support local industry and communities. The farm has been recognised by various external organisations including Fair Trade in Tourism (FTTSA) and the Wine Industry Ethical Trade Association (WIETA). The cellar has ISO 22000 certification and is Fair Trade accredited.

Vineyards

Spier has twelve long-term core growers and nine contract growers. Through the contract growers, Spier Wines has access to more than 700 hectares of vineyards. This enables the winemaking team to source the best grapes from the best areas, grown to Spier Wine’s specification, which ensures sustainable quality at competitive prices.

Grapes are grown mainly in the coastal region, including Stellenbosch, Durbanville, Darling, Elgin Helderberg, Paarl and for sun and winemakers selection vineyards include Riebeek Valley and Breede River.
