    My Column

BWW - The world’s largest wine competition is beginning - Consumers all around the world will combine with thousands of professionals to choose the best wines in the world.

"We believed the opinion of 10,000 consumers or 1,000 professionals to be more correct and more significant than a small group of wine professionals.”

BWW – the Best Wine of the World Competition, true to its name, selects the Best Wines in the World. It is the largest wine competition in the world, whether measured by the number of wines, the number of consumers involved or the judges taking part.

The competition differs significantly from other wine competitions in that the wines are selected by consumers all around the world and many thousands wine during a three-month period of voting, which takes place on Tastingbook.com and via social media, such as Facebook and Instagram.

The public votes and points awarded by wine professionals are tallied, and the twenty wines with the most votes from each competition category enter the finals that will be held in the fall. In the finals, the wines undergo a blind evaluation by panels consisting of leading wine makers, wine writers, Masters of Wine and wine professionals.
The finals are held on three different continents – Europe, Australia and the United States – so that each region evaluates the wines from that region and its nearby areas.

Public voting commences on July 31, 2017 and concludes on October 30, 2017. Judging of the finalists will follow and BWW will announce the Best Wine in the World and the winners of the different categories at the inaugural BWW Awards Gala, to be held in the United States on January 25, 2018.

The competition is organized by the world’s largest wine information service Tastingbook.com (www.tastingbook.com) and the world’s leading fine wine magazines – FINE Magazines (www.fine-magazines.com).

For more information about the competition, please visit www.bestwineoftheworld.com.

BWW warmly welcomes all vineyards to enter their wine for the competition.
Registration is the easiest, fastest, and most affordable in the business.
Registration will begin on May 21 at www.bestwineoftheworld.com and judging commences on July 31.

Pekka Nuikki / Founder of the Fine Wine Magazines, Pro (Finland)  had a tasting of  31 Wines  from  28 Producers

The Finnish summer has not started yet - the sea is still cold (+14c) and it's raining every second day - but the colder the weather is, the better is the taste:)

Here are some summer wines I have tried between the showers.

The Friday evening went with friends and Bordeaux's best wines. We started with the almost perfect Haut Brion 1945 and ended the perfect Yquem 1976 vintage. A total of twenty bottles were shared with our friends at our home.

Last evening was a real " Voyage autour du monde" along with the top 24 wines that wine countries can offer, and there was only four of us enjoying them...Unfortunately, quite a lot of bottles remained half empty, but not the Petrus 2003, Cheval Blanc 1947, Screaming Eagle 1999, Pingus 1995, Haut-Brion Blanc 1995, Lafleur 1996 etc.

Sukula's Barolos surprised positively with their great intensity, complexity and firm body structure - a very confortable surprise as I was having a dinner at their estate in Barolo. As Sukala's second profession is the chef, the wines were not the only ones who shone - thank you Riikka and Jyrki for the warm and overhelming welcome .

Superb visit and tasting at Sandrone in Barolo. ALESTE is their latest creation and is the natural continuity of Luciano's first wine, the Barolo Cannubi Boschis. Giving all the experience, knowledge, patience and passion of his many harvests, Luciano pays tribute, with boldness and sensibility, to the next family generation: "ALESTE" is in fact the combination of the names of his grandchildren ALEssia and STEfano.

Last Friday we had Angelo Gaja tasting with over 30 vintages / Best wine was Gaja Sori Tildin 1978 / 97 points / Good darkish red colour with some slight lightening around the edges and completely opaque. Rich and open bouquet with exquisite aromas of spices, black fruits and truffels. On the palate the wine boasted gentle, silky tannins, with an almost fleshy structure. On the palate it was rich and complex, possessing excellent acidity with flashes of fruit and earth. Good intensity, and some ripe, sweet fruit were still around. A substantial finale, tannins still holding firm, great length pooled with class and freshness. An amazingly satisfactory wine with lots of life ahead. Pure Piedmont drinking pleasure!

Blandy's Bual 1959 Madeira / Decanted five hours before the dessert. Medium-red color. Almost 60 years old and still very vigorous and lively. Very generous nose full of raisins, currants and wild floral aromas. Quite spirity, but still harmonious and well balanced wine.

Perhaps a bit too sweet for my taste, but very stylish and complex wine. Round and supple, hot aftertaste. As good as one can expect. 95 points
