The Story

Nectar Dei, our super-premium wine, an extraordinary cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot, was christened after the ancient name of the Nittardi estate discovered in a document from 1183. As is the tradition of Nittardi, the first bottles of this new wine were presented to Pope Benedict XVI — just as Michelangelo Buonarroti did in the 16th century when he, the owner of the estate at the time, paid tribute to the popes Ju...

Written Notes

Full bottle1,479 g. From the Femferts' Maremma estate called Mongibello delle Mandorlaie between Scansano and Magliano in Toscana, only 8 km away from the sea at an elevation of 250 m. The vineyards lie in the Morellino di Scansano DOCG area. The soil is mostly sand with granite and schist stones and clay underneath. A selection of the best grapes from the Maremma vineyards. I don't have the technical details on this wine but it is generally aged in a mix of barriques and tonneaux, 30% new. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up the majority of the blend, with Petit Verdot, Merlot, Syrah and 'secret' grape varieties the remainder.

Deep cherry red. Spicy oak and spicy fruit, much more place than variety in terms of the aroma – stony and dark-fruited but scented too. Deep and structured and like all the Nittardi reds, whether from Chianti or Maremma, with freshness and finesse. Juicy core with a framework that still needs time, and food, but looks set to age well, despite the hot, dry vintage. As these vines get older, the oak ageing becomes less noticeable, the wine more elegant and distinctive. (JH)
