The Story
Most of the grapes for this wine are grown by us on Kalmoesfontein in granite soils. The rest of the grapes are from our neighbors with whom we work closely. The Cinsault and Shiraz grapes were picked early in the morning and the whole bunches were transferred to the press and pressed slowly so as not extract too much color. The Shiraz juice was allowed 2 hours of skin contact before being drawn o from the skins. The juices were blended and naturally fermented in tank and 4500 foudres.
We have made only 4,201 cases of this wine and its now ready to drink. It was clari ed naturally with a rough ltration was minimal so it my throw a slight deposit over time which of course is harmless.
Secateurs shape our bushvines during the winter pruning and are used to pick the ripe grapes in summer. Our family has, for the last three generations, nurtured our vines so that they can produce fruit of integrity. This is a truly unique rose as it was made from very old vines and really displays the minerality that characterizes the wines from our farm. The aromas are complex red fruits, spice, rose water, currants and the palate is generous and textured with a long nish.
Wine Information
The winery is located on a mountain range which is a granite outcrop and three distinctive types of granitic soil are found on this property - specifically Paardeberg, Lammershoek and Lemoenfontein granites. The soils are extremely old and considered by many to be ‘low potential ‘ as vine growth is not as luxeriant as in other areas. Yields are generally quite low averaging 3-4 tons/ha for Chenin Blanc. No irrigation is used as the soild have the potential to store a good amount of water and slowly release during the growing season. Rainfall is around 480mm/yr falling mainly in the winter months of May – August/September. Winters tend to be cold and wet and leaf fall is quite sudden with the onset of Winter. Otherwise, the weather is pretty much medditteranean.
