WASSILY KANDINSKY

Born in Russia, Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) took first German, then French citizenship. He played a crucial role in the genesis of abstract art. As a young painter his work looked very much like that of his Impressionist and Fauvist contemporaries, but he was wrestling with a question he put in its simplest form in 1908: “I knew for certain that a subject weakened a painting, but then a terming abyss opened beneath my fe...

Vintage 1971

Bordeaux: 1971 was a very good vintage, the only fault of which was being overshadowed by the exceptional 1970 vintage. The size of the 1971 vintage harvest was very small, which made the wines a rarity. Well-stored examples of wine are likely to remain mature for a few more years. Sauternes and Barsac: Sweet wines such as Sauternes and Barsac have been exceptional this year and will last for many decades to come.

Written Notes

First-rate looking bottle. Full, mature, deep dark garnet colour Spicy, open and aromatic nose. Medium body and fleshy wine with real breed and depth. Masculine, slightly robust but perhaps a bit too tannic and dry for my taste, but very fine for the vintage. Long and harsh finish. Will still keep well.

I have always found 1971 to be a good, under the radar vintage in Bordeaux, and the 1971 Mouton Rothschild fit into that theory. It had a very minty nose with the first sign of that old, signatutre eucalyptus. There were cigar and ash qualities as well. Its palate was more plummy with nice body and a pleasant, round finish (90).

Magnum) Ruby, garnet rim, floral and red berries, elegant nose, refined, leather, cigars. Elegant tannins, if a bit lean, nice acidity, matches the body, tannins almost gone, bell peppers, good length. 89

People around the table preferred the heavier Barolo's, so I was left to enjoy this poor duckling by myself and finished half the bottle. I enjoyed it, even if on the lean side, it showed of all it had in a balanced way. Quite a nice drink by itself, but it's to fragile for any food.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is brick red, ruby red, and looking dark and medium. On the nose it is open, intense, mature and complex. The taste is elegant, silky, vivid, refined, with medium tannin ., with silky tannins, drying tannins, and average in acidity, medium-bodied, with balanced structure and mature. On the palate it is layered and has earthy, pepper, herbs, tar, blackcurrant, leather and cigar-box flavours. The finish is long, round and spicy. This wine is sophisticated and fine. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 1-5 years and decant at least 45min before tasting.
