Historia

The estate takes its name from the tower which stands in the main courtyard of the château; it is the remnant of a fort built in the 12th century by the ancestors of Montesquieu. The structure occupied a strategic position and controlled the route between Bordeaux and Toulouse. The stones of the fort were used to build the existing château at the end of the 18th century.

In 1871, the estate attracted the attention of Edouard Kressmann who had just founded his wine merchant business in Bordeaux. He was seduced by the quality of the white wines grown on a remarkable gravelly hilltop with marked relief and outstanding exposure.

To this day one can still find in the plot grafted in 1884, the entire collection of Edouard Kressmann’s selection of grape varieties for his « Grave Monopole Dry », as baptised by the Diva, Adelina Patti. Enhanced by their great age these vine stocks embody the breed, verve and essence which still characterises this wine.

Today, the 6 children of Jean Kressmann own the domain and continue on the family tradition. Tristan and Loïc, the two younger sons, manage the estate with the assistance of the best wine consultants in Bordeaux. With each following vintage they produce the best from this authentic Graves soil.
Since the 1980’s, they have increased the area planted in Sauvignon Blanc to compliment perfectly with the Semillon, the historical grape variety of the property.
For the red varieties, the tradition of blending Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot is now topped up with the excellent Petit Verdot variety, which is planted in one of the best gravel plots of the plateau of Martillac.

The vineyard is divided into two uniform subsectors. On the Martillac plateau, the hill dominates the property and is made up of a patchwork of gravel. These little pebbles deposited there by the river Garonne in the Quaternary period form a finely tuned mix of Quartz, Lydian, Jasper and Flint. These poor soils and drainage constitute an ideal terrain for the vine and in particular for the red grape varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.
Moving closer to the Garonne, the soils take on a different profile of clay and limestone, still with a gravel surface. It is here that the Merlot variety grows best and also our white grape varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

The oldest plot on the property dates from 1884. Its name is Grattecap, from the Latin « gratum caput » which means « vines for delicious wines ».
It occupies « 65 ares » the equivalent of 0.65 hectares in the South-East part of the estate and is predominantly Semillon, the historical grape variety of LaTour-Martillac. You will also find some Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle planted there.
The plot is traditionally cultivated by hand and the soil is ploughed with the help of a horse.

Viinivalmistus

The reputation of the property depends largely on the quality of its white wines. Our Winemaker, Valerie Vialard fully appreciates the responsibility of this legacy. Under her direction, our teams carry out very careful work from harvesting to the bottling of the wine.

The Sauvignon Blanc and the Semillon grapes are manually harvested in successive selections according to the progress of their ripeness. The bunches are transported in their crates, to keep them intact and on reaching the cellar, a further selection is carried out on a sorting table.
The grapes are then pressed gently to extract the aromas of the skins. The must is clarified naturally before being put in barrels for the fermentation and ageing on lees. A regular stirring of the lees is carried out all the way through the ageing process to add flavour and structure.
The best lots kept aside for the blending of the first wine stay on their lees for more than one year in French oak barrels.

The harvesting of the red grapes is also carried out by hand by a strong and faithful team of grape pickers. They begin with the Merlot, the earliest ripening grape variety, followed by the Petit Verdot and the Cabernet Sauvignon. In the cellar, the bunches are first destemmed before being meticulously sorted on route to being fermented in thermostatically controlled stainless steel tanks.
Each plot is vinified separately with the utmost attention. The wines are aged for 16-18 months in French oak barrels.
