The Story

The result of rigorous selection at each stage of production, in both the vineyard and the winery, this great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé, with time it develops a delicate and complex bouquet.

The wines have considerable ageing potential and are exceptionally long-lived. Certain vintages (1921, 1929, 1982, 1990, 2009, 2016) are considered legendary.

Matured for 18 months in 60% new oak barrels, the premium wine accounts on average for 55% of the estate’s total production.

The 95-hectare vineyard in one single block, extremely unusual in the Medoc, is located on a very well exposed gravelly land, by the Gironde. The vineyard hence overlooks the estuary. The proximity to this vast body of water locally called “river” has a very smoothing climatic impact on the vineyard. The river and its tide mitigate and moderate the climate’s rigor: by mollifying the frost and refreshing blazing summer heat.

60 % of new french oak barrels, supplied by several carefully- selected coopers are used in Montrose, and 40 % in one year old barrels. The average ageing period is 16 to 18 months.

For our second wine, DAME DE MONTROSE, the proportion of new french oak barrels reaches about 15 to 20 %. The average ageing is 12 months; so begins a long process of racking rhythm.

This is a very natural process of slow wine decanting, to isolate the fine particles still present in the wine. All the wines are finely racked every 3 months, a very traditional method.

The wine is moved from one barrel to the other by gravity. Once the barrel’s bottom is reached, the workers carefully view, with a candle, the lees coming off the clear part of the wine. The fining is made traditionally, in barrels, with fresh egg whites, in order to refine the wine and to soften the tannins.

Wine Information

Blend: Cabernet-Sauvignon: 53 %, Merlot: 37 %, Cabernet franc: 9 %, Petit Verdot: 1 %

The year 2010 proved to be particularly dry and relatively hot – climate data characteristics of the great Bordeaux vintages (1929, 1945, 1947, 1959, 1961, 1989, and 2009).
From spring onwards, this dry hot climate was prevalent right up until the first days of autumn; this meant that the grapes had ideal conditions in which to grow and reach a perfect maturity. We waited to harvest with growing confidence and a sense of inner calm.
20 hectares adjoining the property were added to the existing Montrose vineyard, expanding our one single vineyard, of excellent and homogeneous quality.
The perfect maturity of the grapes and above all the superb quality of their tannins enabled us to find the perfect balance between power and elegance, body and finesse. The tannins are silky and smooth with complex aromatic qualities of a great Montrose wine.
Period of harvest: September 27th – October 15th

Vuosikerta 2010

Drought and cool temperatures contribute to optimal ripeness

The sum of summer temperatures in 2010 was close to that of summer 2009 (962°C compared to 982°C), but significantly colder than those of 2005, which totaled 1052°C. These cool temperatures had a substantial influence on the balance of our wines, preserving a good level of acidity and an attractive aromatic freshness.

Very little precipitation (only 267 mm) from March to August 2010 generating a drought of similar intensity to that of 2005, when only 227 mm of rain fell.

Another characteristic of the 2010 vintage is the low temperatures especially during the first three weeks of August, which allowed good acidity levels to be preserved in the grapes while maintaining an attractive aromatic freshness.

Massive in fruity extract and new oak, flooding the mouth with soft, ultrarich flavors of blackberries and dark chocolate and a leathery, peppery, grilled meat quality. This is the kind of wine even a non-red wine drinker will be dazzled by, and connoisseurs will appreciate its power and finesse. Ready now for sheer opulence, and should develop through 2030, at least.

The robe: black with ruby hues. Dense and deep
The nose: complex with notes of mocha, zan, blackcurrant, raspberry, and violet
The palate: blackcurrant, morello, redcurrant, and cocoa give to the palate a rich touch of mellowness
Long, ample and homogeneous wine. The after taste is neat, and the mid-palate complex and balanced. The soft tannins are neat and straight on a lingering finish.
Splendid wine. Classic of Bordeaux, elegant and noble.

The very classy 2010 Montrose is a deep ruby purple, offering up notes of ripe blackberries, plums, blackberries, cedar and tobacco, supported by a seductive array of blackberry, tobacco and tea leaf flavours, and lovely full ripe tannins that are fine and seamless. Another fabulous vintage for Montrose, this is a more classic and restrained style compared with the 2009.

  • 97p

Hint of marzipan, kirsch, concentration, this is a bit more strict on the palate, very tight, quite linear and serious, tight textured, big structure too, nice bramble fruit coming through.

Deep ruby. Dark fruits. Intense, dark fruity, rich and ripe, scented, detailed, almost massive, dark, lush and fruity. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, intense, deep, rounded fruit with massive structure, detailed, very long. 98

Tasted on the 16th June 2016. Served in pair with 2009. It was like meeting twins - this wine was exact copy of 2009! The only difference - more sweetness and fatter texture in 2010. Velvety hammer blow! One thing to remember - in 2010 ripeness inside and outside grapes happened at the same time, in 2009 there was 10 days difference because of rain in September.
