Laville Haut-Brion is arguably the greatest dry white wine in Bordeaux. 

Only 1,000 cases per year are produced from a tiny and exclusive 3.7 hectare vineyard with an average vine age of over 50 years. It is a blend of 70% Sémillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc - the grapes are barrel-fermented and the wine is matured in 100% new oak barriques for 15-18 months before being bottled.

Aromatically complex on the nose and almost lusciously rich on the palate, with strong mineral overtones, and with a finish to die for. The wine demands extended cellaring and should rarely be approached before its 10th birthday. Laville-Haut-Brion is classified as a Graves Cru Classé.

Since 2009, the fruit from Laville Haut-Brion has been used in the production of Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc.

This evening was a prime example of a proper, civilized six-pack. We ended up with a ‘Top Ten’ wines of all-time discussion. For those of you that may not know, or that have forgotten, it goes 1945 DRC Romanee-Conti, 1945 Petrus, 1934 DRC Romanee-Conti for starters… It was great to go back in time with The Historian, and I look forward to more lessons in the near future.

 John Kapon / CEO / Ackerr Merrall & Condit, Pro (United States)  tasted  1 wines  from  Château Laville Haut-Brion . In a tasting of  25 wines 

Let’s talk Bordeaux. The Commander brought two gorgeous ‘82s which were both singing. L’Evangile, which is now owned and run by Lafite, and Trotanoy, which is owned and run by the Moueix family (aka Petrus) remain two of the best buys in all of Bordeaux, and these two wines showed why. The L’Evangile had sexy aromas and flavors of plum, olive and chocolate, and while still a bit tight, it was thick and delicious. The Trotanoy was a bit more open, dare I say sexier in its nose, showing blacker fruit and great autum floor action. It may be maturing a touch faster than the L’Evangile, but I found them qualitatively equal. The 1985 Petrus has never been considered a great Petrus, but out of double magnum, it came damn close. It was another sexy Pomerol nose, with more wheat and dust, along with touches of purple marzipan. The palate was rich and beautiful, w ith hints of olive and plum, and richer and more tannic than I expected, probably thanks to the larger format as much as anything else.

“I think I have had this wine on only two other occasions, and that includes every vintage ever made. There is only one barrel made of this wine every year, and the 1992 Leflaive Montrachet lived up to the hype. While many 1992s are riding off into the sunset, this 1992 was still ascending. It had an amazing nose that gave off seductive signals of butter, citrus and yeast. Smoke and exotic spice followed. Its spice qualities kept unfolding, so diverse that this wine was worthy of its own supermarket section. This was a mesmerizing Montrachet that was rich, clean and vivacious. There is no doubt that Leflaive is the king of the ring for the 1992 vintage, make that queen. The acidity was still fresh, and this thick, attention-grabbing wine just kept getting better and better and better and better. 98 points”

“The winner of our 1966 Vintage tasting: Henschke Hill of Grace 1966 / Moderately intense, tawny bright colour. The nose is open with elegantly developed richness showing ripe dark fruits – plums, black currants and brambles, floral tones – violets, tobacco, mocha and hints of vanilla. The palate is rich and voluptuous. The texture is silky with lovely acidity, mellow tannins and ripe black fruits. Exquisite harmony and suppleness charmed by lingering long finish. Wonderful wine with powerful character, marvellous depth and great intensity suggesting it will keep still easily 10 more years.

“Annual The Vine Club’s 1000 points’ dinner tasting offered again some unique experiences in a beautiful coastal setting off Helsinki. The name of the theme derives from the amount of points the wines form together given by the world’s esteemed wine critics.
The evening got off to a superb start with Bollinger RD 1975 bubbling in the glasses, followed by a duel of two great white wines, Comte de Voguë and Comte Lafon from Bourgogne. The richness and tempting sweet fruitiness of the Meursault decided the victory in favour of Comte Lafon. What is noteworthy is that, today, the Musigny of Comte de Voguë is made from young grapevines, thus the name Bourgogne Blanc. This duel was fought blind.
The remaining wines of the evening were tasted open. Château Lynch-Bages 1961, Château Latour 1964 Mg, Château Margaux 1959, Château La Mondotte 1996 and La Mission Haut-Brion 1975 from Bordeaux proved to be the finest wines of the tasting. No doubt, this was an unforgettable evening with rare and exquisite wines.

“Haut-Brion Vertical 1918-1999 / Vintage 1989 100 points: Deepish ruby, garnet rim. Highly scented and massive intensity, rich, ripe, layered, red and darker fruits, detailed, leather, plums, tobacco, superb nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, sweet ripe red fruits, darker berries, layered, detailed, nuanced, superb and hedonistic, impossible to describe, stunning length.”

“Perfect Mouton-Rothschild 1986: 100 points/ "This is the only challenger to the 1945. Incredibly youthful with a wild nose of cherries, spices, tobacco. On the palate more spice, dark plum, smoke, silky texture, but the tannins are still quite forbidding. Open up after about an hour to become more charming."”
