Wine Moments

Here you can see wine moments from tastingbook users.    or    to see wine moments from your world.

John Kapon / CEO / Ackerr Merrall & Condit, Pro (United States)  tasted  1 wines  from  Pierre Ponnelle . In a tasting of  20 wines

Cardboard was the first thing that I noticed in the nose of the 2004 Pavillon Rouge du Margaux, in the best way possible and not in a corked way, I should add. Coffee, roasted nut and cassis were all secondary, with pinches of earth blending into the coffee. Tertiary aromas of cedar and fir spice emerged in this round and tender wine. The palate was earthy with that gout de terroir, possessing candle wax flavors and a very dry finish, typical of the vintage. I remembered this wine being more impressive at the winery, but then again doesn’t it always taste better there? Gil insisted that the white was so good, it knocked down the ’04 a notch or two.

Roumier is one of this collector’s favorite producers, and the auction will feature over 120 lots of his wines dating back to 1923!!! This magnum was an other-worldly experience. The wine had an incredible nose, Roumier all the way with its roses, spice, beef, cedar, minerals, cocoa powder and incredible spine, tannins and alcohol. Wowowow! Its intense leather flavors were S & M worthy, and there was enough acidity in this magnum for most cases!!! Dalia picked up some exotic ‘watermelon,’ and it was right on the money (as she usually is), although I was quick to point out that it was closer to the rind than the super sweet quality of the fruit. For someone that is not a regular drinker (I am working on that), I must admit she has some of the best innate senses that I have come across. She is the type of woman that wars are started over. Secondary flavors of rose and beef emerged, and its slate and minerality were enough to get Flintstone on the job. Incredible stuff

“It was Saturday night, a seemingly improbable Day Two of this Bacchanalian extravaganza. The Rev was one day older, and we were all very much wiser thanks to the incredible array of once in a lifetime wines experienced the night before. There was not much more to do except do it again.”

Michael Jones, Wine Blogger (United States)  tasted  1 wines  from  Pierre Ponnelle . In a tasting of  19 wines

“We would taste the vertical line up of Château Haut-Marbuzet in the blind and then attempt to guess the year of their origin based on age characteristics and quality of the specific wines and a historical knowledge of the various conditions of years past. This was a first time effort for me; as it turns out, I was quite inaccurate in my guesses of the vintage years- no surprise! The gents from Fine Magazine were much better, but surprises awaited us all.”

Pekka Nuikki / Founder of the Fine Wine Magazines, Pro (Finland)  tasted  2 wines  from  Pierre Ponnelle . In a tasting of  18 wines

“Musar 1960/ The 1960 was the first vintage made with new philosophy brought by Serge Hochar to the wine making process: no additives, no fining, no treatment and no filtration applied to the wines.
This forty-year old bottle looked like new, and had excellent by the neck level. Very dark, and deep, mature-looking appearance. Sound and clean bouquet with wonderful scented flavors of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry fruit. Surprisingly full-bodied and complex wine. Still very sweet on the palate with soft, melted tannins and has a long and lingering, smooth aftertaste – Vau, this one was a lot enhanced and more youthful than the previous two bottles I have tasted. The old saying “there are no great wines, only great bottles” rings a bell again! For me Chateau Musar is the best wine of the 1960 vintage. Grand effort Serge! 92 points

“A sublime tasting experience; the old Ponnelle Burgundies remain my favorites! Intriguing nose of violets, dried cherries, spices and a touch of sandalwood. On the palate, red raspberry entry leading to ripe red cherry into the long, refined finish. Spice notes emerge. OMG, what purity and focus. So elegant. Perfection!”
