Written Notes

These  wines were labelled with Christie’s labels and were in good condition, levels at mid-shoulder. They originate back to a time when Napoléon Bonaparte was living on exile on St Helena. He was allowed to receive a pipe of best Madeira. When this pipe arrived he was already suffering of arsenic poisoning. When tasting it from the pipe he felt ill in his stomach and thought it was due to the faulty wine. Thus he refused drinking it and the pipe was delivered back to Madeira by the Blandy family. They bottled part of this pipe in 1840 as a vintage Madeira and the rest they kept for a solera. This solera was bottled in 1957 for Queen Elizabeth II and her husband the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Madeira. Bright golden amber medium-intense colour. The nose gives first only volatile aromas but after while in the glass wine opens up offering smokey, leathery aromas with almonds and nougatine. Lovely nose! The sweet taste with extremely oily and crisp texture takes hold on the palate. Next there one feels the dried fruits on the mid-palate. The long silky finish with warming alcohol shows more oxidation but still in a refined way. The wine leaves a very long aftertaste.
