The Story

The Sauternes produced by Château de Fargues is the result of outstanding gifts of nature and the motivation – one might even say the stubbornness – of a family devoted to fine wine, and an attentive, enthusiastic winemaking team.

The 1998 vintage

Weather and growth cycle

Bud break came early, starting in late March. The hot weather in May made up for a cool, wet month of April. It became very hot again after July 14th, and this hot spell lasted two thirds into the month of August...

Written Notes

This vintage is generally better than 1999 in Sauternes & Barsac, both concerning quality of noble rot and concentration of fruit. That's also the case at Fargues, who produced and incredibly well-balanced, complex and beautifully structured wine. Keep it for additional 10-15 years.

Deep golden, amber tints. Decanted for five hours which I tend to find that must be done with the wines from de Fargues to get some elegance to these heavy and rich Sauternes. Apricots, botrytis, raisins, rich and intense nose. Fresh acidity, fruity and rich palate, intense, more harmony with air, long finish. 94
