The Story

A rather late ripening variety, it accounts for 45% of the Kirwan vineyard and thrives best on gravel-based soil, the first to absorb the spring warmth. Although fickle in yield, it gives the wine its structure, forming small, thick-skinned grapes. As it ages, it reveals superbly delicate aromas and a marvelous complexity.

Merlot comprises 30% of the Kirwan vineyard and thrives on more varied soils. In the temperate climate of our region, Merlot grows well on sandy or clay-based land, colder or more humid. It can also grow on gravelly soil, becoming more delicate, whereas on clay it produces a more potent wine.

It is often more accessible than Cabernet Sauvignon when young, and like its neighbor it grows finer with age for decades.

Written Notes

Dark purple red with violet hue and almost black core. Expressive nose with ripe fruit, dark berries, blackcurrants and sweet elderberries, fine spiciness in the background. On the palate elegant with firm but ripe tannins, juicy fruit and good length.

Deep colour. Dark cherry, dark plum aromas with cola, cedar notes. Supple and expressive with generous dark plum, cassis flavours, fine chocolaty textures and underlying mocha oak. Finishes bitter sweet. Nice tension, richness and balance. 94 points

Kirwan Margaux Good colour, cherry ice cream on the nose, deep and promising, the palate has good definition, with plenty of texture and mid-palate, this has a bit extra proportion on the finish too, quite solid and persistent. Very good this year. 91-93/100 2014-2040
