The Story

In 1873, CAPTAIN WILLIAM PETERSON came to Napa and established a pioneering winery on our St. Helena property. Throughout the 1930’s and 40’s, the site grew to become Napa’s most important winery, producing nearly 40% of its entire vintage. The fruit for our “Eighteen Seventy-Three” hails from the rugged mountain slopes that frame Napa Valley. Power and individuality underscore this wine, a deliberate intent to commemorate the trailblazing spirit of Napa’s first vintners.

Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Ageing: 26 months in 70% New French Oak

Wine Information

Our 2017 harvest wrapped up early fall following summer heat spurts and a growing season that saw significant rain throughout the state, ending a five-year drought. The season began with rainfall that refilled reservoirs and replenished soils. Harvest began early ata normal pace, and then progressed rapidly during a heat wave in late August and early September. Temperatures cooled in mid-September, slowing the harvest pace and allowing grapes to ripen gradually. This is a strong quality vintage.

The taste is fresh, full, focused, fat, toasty, full of energy, robust, with sweet tannins, and average in acidity, full-bodied, with well-structured, perfectly balanced, well-integrated, concentrated, satin texture structure and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has toasty, perfumed, new-oak, blackcurrant and blackberry flavours. The finish is long, flavorful, round and spicy. This wine is fine.
