The Story

Marcassin (french for ‘young wild boar’) is a VERY small winery – in fact it’s so small that the wines have actually been made at the Martinelli winery in Russian River Valley. Located on the Sonoma Coast, the Marcassin vineyard is planted to 50/50 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and is about 10 acres in size. Fruit for the other vineyard designated wines is sourced from other neighboring vineyards. Marcassin will always be a small winery; John & He...

Vintage 1993

Abundant rainfall throughout the winter and spring provided favorable moisture to the vines over the growing season. An uneventful, warm spring concluded with unexpected rain during the bloom period in May, resulting in lower berry set and ultimate crop reduction of 20% to 30% at harvest. Written Notes

Helen Turley, the winemaker of Marcassin, is America's most famous consulting winemaker. At the same time she is a very traditional winemaker. Her simple philosophy is: find great vineyards, farm them precisely, limit crops, make sure the grapes ripen fully—even if it leads to higher sugar levels than many winemakers prefer— and ferment using natural yeasts. Sometimes unfussiness is the best way to create fine wines, like this beauty. Decanted 45 minutes. Striking wine, opulent, concentrated Chardonnay, the best bottle we have tasted from this small estate. After 30 minutes of aeration, the wine opens and develops beautiful richness and complexity with spicy aromas of pineapple, hazelnut and butter. Well brought-up structure with a subtle tannic bite, surrounded by soft creamy texture. This 1993 Marcassin shows brilliant balance and surprisingly stylish finesse. The long intense and lingering finish with fresh, lovely ripe fruit. A super result.
