Written Notes

Aldo Conterno Granbussia 1998 –

My contribution to our monthly Saturday wine lunch group, for the Italian event, was the ‘97 and ‘98 Granbussia (sadly, not something I can repeat). I was delighted with both (has anyone ever had a disappointing Granbussia?) and there was much discussion, and fairly evenly split opinions, on which was the better wine. For me, this pipped the ’97 but not by much.

Spices, dense chocolate notes, florals, warm earth. Silky, ever so silky tannins. Dark fruits. Great length. Such a lovely wine to drink now, though the end is not yet in sight. Barolo of the highest quality.

Ruby, thin brick rim. Tar and roses, tight, classical and still bit more fruity, leather and scented, intense. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, lively, cherries, anise and leather, mouthwatering, long finish. 93

"At these tastings where everyone contributes a bottle or two, it is amazing how often you see people pick their own as the wine of the day (I’ve even seen it where we also voted on ‘worst wine of the day’ and everyone but the bottle’s owner agreed on a certain rather dire wine – the owner having rated it top!). So I really try and avoid that if I can. Not here (and reassuringly I was not alone). This was my star performer on the day. I gather that the ’99 is considered a marginally better wine. It was a close run thing on the day, and some preferred it, but for me, the 98 was the pick.
Dense and yet silky. Spices, dark chocolate, dark berries, florals, warm earth. This is impeccably balanced. Very fine, silky tannins. Stunning stuff. Great length. A wine of finesse, power and elegance. Great future. but glorious now. Oh for a case or two of this in the cellar!
