Vintage 2018

AUSTRALIA: Very promising quality with the most optimistic reviewers declaring 2018 great in every region and for every variety. The more cautious view is that early frosts reduced yields, but that consistent good weather throughout the second half of the growing season actually resulted in great potential.

‘Baker’s Run’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 – Baker’s Run is a lovely tribute to Eric Brand, who was a baker before he was involved with wine, his profession after returning from War. Coonawarra Cabernet – a classic combination and not hard to see why. At this early stage, this is much more restrained and muted than the other wines in this set. It needs time. Hold off. Don’t waste it by drinking it now. Give it five years, or better still, ten.

The structure is tight at the moment. Warm earth notes. Tobacco leaf and dry herbs. Black fruits. This is supple and seamless. The structure is excellent. Fine, mouthcoating tannins. This is a wine with length that lingers, if that makes any sense. Promises a decade of improvement at least. Give it that. 93.

Another solid Coonawarra red from Sam Brand’s Brand & Sons. Authenticity here in droves too. Mint, cedar, dark berries. Vanilla oak cuts like a swathe through the middle of it, alcohol just a little spirity. This feels correct, and very much how $26 Coonawarra reds should be if a little stewed/minty. Good. Best drinking: Worth 2-3 years and then drink over fifteen years or more. 17.5/20, 91/100.
