Well-rounded and Impressive

Written Notes

The 1989 vintage stood out for its early picking and its outstanding richness and ripeness. The harvest began at Château Angelus over three weeks before the average picking dates. Moderately dark, tawny colour. Complex, smoky and earthy nose with tobacco, mocha and dark cacao. Medium-bodied, moderate acidity, concentrated palate with restrained fruit, firm powdery tannins and harmonious finish. Smoky, tobacco, and black fruit flavours in long silky finish.

Tasted in July 2024. It was Hubert de Bouard's fifth vintage since taking over management in 1985. This wine was loaded with creamy cherry fruit and had fabulous complexity, with great midpalate, remarkable acidity, a seamless structure, and a long, sensual finish. Intellectual wine! This wine can easily be kept for another 35 years.

This vintage began its growth cycle extremely early and resulted in exceptionally rich, ripe fruit. Harvesting took place three weeks earlier than average. The wines have intense colour and display an impressive aromatic palette on the nose with hints of spice, tobacco and liquorice. They are rich and lush as a result of a perfect match between vigour and balance.
