Wine Information

1996 is one of our favorites, because of its clearness given by sauvignon (Xavier Planty)

Stemming from an early harvest (started on the 28th of august), fist time since 1883, and a very pure botrytis, 1996 Guiraud is a complex and powerful wine, built for long years.

Deep yellow tinge with glittering bronze reflects.

Vintage 1996

1996 presents itself as a “classic” Bordeaux year, although – as Jancis Robinson MW wrote – not in the “lean” sense; Although Farr Vintners director Tom Hudson told the drinks industry it may have been a "very good" rather than "really great" year as it was not uniformly excellent across the region .

Written Notes

The first vintage of Château Guiraud that was launched as 100% organic wine. The colour indicates an older wine or oxidation. However, the aromas are pure and developing – apricot marmelade, caramelized orange peel, some iodine and some lovely baking spices. The palate is lusciously sweet and harmonious. Viscous oily texture is supported by gentle acidity. Long and lingering bitter-sweet finish with tangerine and honey. Perfect companion to Tarte Tatin with vanilla ice cream. Drink now. Decant 20 min. Serve at 7-8°C. – Juha Lihtonen (Nov 2021) 93p

One of the stars of the vintage for Sauternes, the 1996 Guiraud offers a sumptuous nose of tangerine fruit intermixed with caramel and buttered corn. The wine displays a deep golden color, and striking flavors of Chinese black tea, marmalade, honey, and citrus. The powerful yet elegant flavors remain in the mouth for a significant period of time. While this wine is traditionally a blend of 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon, Xavier Plantey, the estate's manager, told us that there is nearly 45% Sauvignon Blanc in the final blend of the 1996. 93 points
