The Story

The Grand Vin is the product of exceptional terroirs from the former Léoville estate. These terroirs are located mainly in the Clos Léoville Las Cases, which you pass as you leave Saint- Julien village for Pauillac. They extend over nearly 60ha producing Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet Francs with a complex, polished expression and characteristics which are totally unique to the Grand Vin of Léoville du Marquis de Las Cases and have been wide...

Wine Information

Weather conditions at the beginning of the growth cycle were simply ideal and led on to hot and sunny conditions through June and July. August was a little cooler with a few welcome rainstorms. The hot weather came back in September with particularly warm nights. The regular Southern winds kept any potential rain away during the harvest period.

Written Notes

The Saint Julien appellation is situated in the very heart of the Médoc. ElevenClassified Growths cover the great majority of the vineyards in Saint Julien. The wines are said to be both powerful and elegant, concentrated and suitable for laying down. But even so each wine remains unique.
This Leoville was an excellent condition. Decanted three hours. Very deep, dark, mature colour. Quite youthful on the nose – aromasof blackcurrants, violets, and truffles. A wonderful concentration of fruit and flavour – still powerful, complex and rich well-balanced wine. There are deep seams of fruit in this wine and a wonderful balance and complexity finishing in long tastemellowed by toasty vanillin oak. Very feminine and refined. This Leoville is excellent to drink now, but can last well for a few more decades.

The nose was deep and intense with a lot of spine. Rob found it 'quixotic,' whatever that meant. It was a big word from Big Boy. The wine was still young but brooding in a mature fashion. There were great aromas of grape, cassis, earth and slate. The palate was spicy and intense; it was certainly a great bottle of 1982 Las Cases. Let's just say that I have already seen considerable variation with many different '82s. This was a bottle that was still young and should be profound in twenty years. Mike awoke from a deep slumber to utter 'cucumbers,' but I actually saw what he was talking about

This wine has required a lot of patience from consumers. 36 years to be exact. However, this was worth the wait. The wine has softened, filled out and opened up. With a short decant, the cedar, tobacco and blackberry were accompanied by cigar box aromatics. Full-bodied, concentrated and complex, the wine is regal, a little bit firm and incredibly long and mouth-filling. If you have been waiting for the wine to mature, this is ready for consumption.

I have had perfect bottles of this cuvee, but, perplexingly, the bottles from my cellar tend to be broodingly backward and require plenty of coaxing. This huge wine is, in many ways, just as massive as Leoville Barton, but it possesses a greater degree of elegance as well as unreal concentration. Classic lead pencil, cassis, kirsch, cedar, and spice characteristics are abundant in both the nose and full-bodied flavors. The tannins are still there, and, at least from my cellar, this 1982 does not appear to have changed much in the last 10-12 years. One wonders how much patience admirers of this brilliant St.-Julien will continue to exhibit.

Decent color and a wonderful huge, spicy nose – very inviting! Intense berry fruit on the palate, nicely ripe, good acidity. This wine has a lot of charm, but somehow it seems a little one dimensional – “clean” fruit, but not much else. Certainly an enjoyable wine, but falls a bit short of the promising start. Is it over the hill? I wonder if there was more stuffing in this one a few years back… Parker had this at 95+ in his last tasting; I think it has faded and I’d score it 91.

1982 Chateau Leoville-las-Cases, Bordeaux, France D1,5h, G2h (Gothenburg, Sweden, Oct 2012) Open but still bit undeveloped nose with dark plummy, cassis fruit and spicy notes of dark licorice and gravelly minerality. Gains complexity with air and ads sweet tobacco and floral notes. The nose has more to give with further aging or longer decanting. Medium bodied with a very smooth and elegant structure. Seamless from start to finish with fine grained tannins. Very pure, almost subtle flavor profile that mirror the nose with damson plums, cassis and spicy notes in the background. The wine has a feel of fragile masculinity . Very elegant and long but has more to give. Drink now-2038 97+p.
