The Story

The wines here at Chateau Montelena are often described as having classic “old-world” structure with ripe California fruit, and it is in years like 2010 that this really shines through. Written Notes

The fourth wine in this flight of five was super intense. The nose was very kinky, meaty and chocolaty, with inky, melted black fruits on hot asphalt. There was stony balance to the fruit, like a spine. The flavors were full of chocolate, minerals and meat; the wine was thick and heavy and had to be a great Cali Cab. It reminded me of Pride.s style, and I thought it was a mid 1990.s Pride Reserve Cab. It was 1978 Montelena. Wow! With time, the wine got a little oakier and more herbal in the glass without crossing the line of indecency, showing more of its age

Dark, deep, brick red colour. Pronounced, cassis, cigar box, smoky, licorice, touch of floral tones–violets. Firm, complex, mineral, smoky, supple tannins, fresh acidity, concentrated, great depth. Long, refined, very focused. Surprisingly vital! – JL 95p (8/2011)
