Wine Information

A superb and generous vintage / The temperatures in 2009 were close to those in 2005, and rainfall was similar to 2000 – two great examples with regard to crucial ripening parameters! Summer was relatively dry with beautiful sunny days and cool nights. Thanks to deep rooting and meticulous work in the vineyard to find the best possible equilibrium between the soil and the vines, vine growth came to a halt on the 20th of July and a long, fine r...

Vintage 2009

Much like 1947, 1961 and 2005, 2009 is a year of almost overly (for Bordeaux) flamboyant and opulent wines with high maturity and low acidity. The tannins are exceptionally ripe, while the wines are quite voluptuous in style. The Left Bank recorded more hours of sunshine than legendary vintages such as 1947 and 1982, and the grapes had higher sugar concentrations than in 2003 and 2005. The key was significant diurnal temperature variations tha...

Written Notes

Good looking normal size bottle and in an perfect condition. Colour is cherry red, and looking clear and deep. On the nose it is intense and complex. The taste is voluptuous, fresh, elegant, and dry, warming, with high tannin, with silky tannins, and high in acidity, medium-bodied, with multi-dimensional structure and developing. On the palate it is layered and has blueberry, truffles, toasty, earthy, new-oak and chocolate flavours. The finish is endless and spicy. This wine is masterpiece. I paid around 100-200€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 20-30 years, decant at least 1h before tasting and this is a good invest wine. Good value for money. I do recommend.

Magnum. Blackish crimson. Mild scent in great balance. Sweet start with very opulent palate entry. Maybe just a little more worked than usual? Not super-concentrated but lots of fun with mild, ripe fruit and a lovely sweet undertow. The finish is not that rich or long but the whole is lots and lots of fun and flattery. Spicy edge. Very opulent without being heavy or sweet.

This complexity was also present on the palate, and the wine soon proved to be rich, powerful, balanced, and refreshing. With time, power and concentration have become its hallmarks – but not at all at the expense of finesse. The tannin is incredibly rich and there is a beautiful, long aftertaste. The aromatic complexity on the nose carries over to the palate, which features superb red fruit and spicy flavours (clove, liquorice, and cinnamon) as well as subtle overtones of graphite, gunflint, and violet… 2009 red Smith Haut Lafitte displays a rare combination of power, richness, outstanding elegance, and delicate tannin.
Deep ruby. Ripe, vanilla, scented, deep, bit rich, coconut and floral high notes. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, rounded texture, ripe, fresh, bit edgy finish, slightly warm. 94
