The Story

The Hill of Corton lies in the midst of a cluster of famous wine-growing villages – Ladoix-Serrigny, Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Savigny-lès-Beaune – with, to the north, the southern end of the Côte de Nuits, where vineyards mingle with stone quarries (Comblanchien limestone). The vineyards lie at heights of 250-330 metres and form a kind of amphitheatre not found elsewhere in the Côte. The Hill of Corton produces white Corton-Charle...

Vintage 2014

The 2014 vintage in Burgundy was a very complicated one, although less so than those in 2013, 2012 and 2011, which featured dramatic crop shortages due to shatter, bad fruit sets and hailstorms.

Written Notes

The nose is radiant, with pure fruit at the core, followed by hints of popcorn and salty butter. On the palate, the wine is laser focused and perfectly balanced. Very approachable right now with obvious long-term aging potential.

This is aromatically all but mute and it required very aggressive swirling to gradually coax the grudgingly nose of wood, mineral reduction, petrol, green apple, white rose and spice elements to reveal themselves. In the same vein as the nose, the dense and well-muscled broad-shouldered flavors are very, very tightly wound while delivering an abundance of minerality on the massively persistent finish. This potentially ranks as the wine of the vintage and that is no small statement given just how good the best 2014 whites are. With all of those justifiably merited compliments though, note well that this masterpiece in the making will not only age effortlessly for years to come, it's going to need time and I wouldn't even think about touching a bottle for at least a decade. In a word, brilliant.
