Wine Advocate: The 2010 Musigny Vieilles Vignes is incredibly long and silky on the palate. Saline notes add urgency and vibrancy to the expressive red fruit in this beautifully woven, textured Musigny. Currently the Musigny appears to be revealing just a fraction of its potential. The sweet floral notes and super-refined red fruit that emerge over time are stunningly beautiful, though, and it is just a matter of time before the wine is fully ...

The Story

The Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is inextricably linked to the Grand Cru vineyard of Musigny—in some eyes the pinnacle of Pinot Noir—a wine that should be both complete and profound but never heavy: 'majesty itself' claims Clive Coates. In 2009 Millet started picking on September 9 in order to keep as much as freshness as possible. The fruit was 100% destemmed. New oak ranged from 15% for the Chambolle villages to 35-40% for the Bonnes Mares...

Wine Information

The origins of Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, one of the oldest estates in Burgundy, date back to 1450 when Jean Moisson endowed the church in Chambolle-Musigny. It was he who built the house, together with the cuverie and other buildings around the inner courtyard of the domaine. His grand-daughter offered, as dowry, the nucleus of the de Vogüé domaine, whose stewardship, after some twenty generations, continues with Claire de Causans and Ma...

Vintage 2010

THE 2010 BURGUNDY VINTAGE

Compared with 2009, these figures represent a deficit of 25 percent in red and 16 percent in white.

It was a cold, drawn-out winter, some two degrees cooler than the average, though rainfall and sunshine were normal. There was one severe attack of frost on December 22nd, just before Christmas, which caused widespread damage on the upside of the main road from Beaune to Dijon. In many places the road is on highe...

Written Notes

Medium-full colour. Ripe, plump nose. Still rather hidden. A slight touch of attenuation as it evolved. Medium-full body. Good tannins. Good grip. Plenty of fruit. Not as complex or as rich as the two others. But fine plus. 18.0p

Inside Information

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé can trace its roots back over 550 years, to 1450, and the Chambolle vines of Jean Moisson. Highly regarded as the greatest estate in Chambolle Musigny, today the domaine is headed by its 20th generation - Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, the granddaughters of the late Comte Georges de Vogüé. Winemaker François Millet thins his crop to optimize flavors through reasonable yields. He ages 30-40% of the Grands Crus in new oak barrels, a move that emphasizes earth and fruit flavors instead of spicy wood aromas. Only the grapes from the older vines (25 to 50 years) in the Musigny go into the Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes. The domaine is inextricably linked to the Grand Cru vineyard of Musigny, considered by many the pinnacle of Pinot Noir.
