100 points The Wine Advocate - The 2015 Romane-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru from Domaine Leroy is one of the most magical wines to be found in Burgundy in this vintage, soaring from the glass with a bouquet of kaleidoscopic complexity, featuring notes of rose petal, blood orange, potpourri and bright berry fruit, with only hints of the savory complexity to come with bottle age. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied and extraordinarily multifa...

The Story

There are oenophiles who believe that Domaine Leroy produces the greatest wines in the world. The estate was founded in Burgundy in 1868 and today is owned and run by Lalou Bize-Leroy, a dynamo of a woman who represents the current generation of the founding family. Bize-Leroy is famous, among other reasons, for being an early adopter of biodynamic vineyard cultivation, meaning that there have been no chemicals, fertilizers or pesticides of an...

Wine Information

Romanée-St-Vivant is a great Grand Cru in the commune of Vosne-Romanée, taking its name from the monastery of St-Vivant founded at Vergy in the 10th Century. The vineyard are is quite large for this part of Vosne, just under 9.5ha, and is further fown the sloper with richer deeper soils than those of Richebourg and "the Romanées." The wines are excellent, typical Vosnes, silky and svelte with the richness and gravitas of a Grand Cru, though ne...

Vintage 2015

The 2015 Harvest by Clive Coates MW

The bad news is Chablis. In the early hours of Tuesday 1st September a severe storm hit the Chablis area. From Irancy up to the grands crus of Blanchots and Les Clos a swathe of hail – some hailstones as large as golf balls – has affected some 100 hectares of the vineyard. In all 97 mm of rain fell in six hours. The weather then cleared, threatening rot, and most growers rushed out to harvest before it wa...

Written Notes

This is as close to a perfect Romanee-St-Vivant as one can get. The texture is silky and sumptuous, the nose beguiling and the palate filled with complex layers of flavors that linger for what seems like several minutes. Gorgeous nose of rose petals and violets opens up to a palate that is powerful yet elegant with incredible finesse and length. This is a powerful Musigny that has wonderful tension and fine, detailed flavors. Best after 2030.
