1980 Dunn Howell Mountain. Dinner tonight with friends at Bouchon in Yountville to celebrate 3 of our birthdays and a successful 2011 harvest. Served as the only blind "bonus" wine in a flight of the known wines 1990 Pichon Baron, 1989 La Conselliante, 1959 Figeac and 1993 Margaux. This wine had stiff competition as you would guess, and I being master of ceremonies tonight made sure the wine was decanted so the tell tale red wax of Dunn was nowhere to be see to influence our tasters. You know a wine is truly profound when YOU know what it is in a blinder and it still surprises you! Since 1980 is our birth year and it is a lackluster vintage around the world, I took a chance on the Dunn because of Randy Dunn's pioneer persona - and boy did this cowboy deliver!! Dark blacksmith-shop-density in this black purple drink. Incredible perfume of dried mountain herbs and cassis. What is it fellas? "This is Bordeaux all the way, and I know my Bordeaux" the first tricked French-born winemaker chimes with certainty. Heckles from the crowd included "whatever this is out-guns the 1990 Pichon! This wine is younger I bet. Damn this is rocket juice!" Imagine a wine 10 years older than the legendary Pichon and La Conseillante totally dominating like this Dunn. On the palate, massive core of weight and power, and black fruite clothed like a night highwayman dressed in all black. Animal pheromones like a black steed the highwayman rides. Then these delicate fresh flower salad tannins on the finish. When I show the guys the sediment on a napkin they realize how much tannin this hero has polymerized over the years. Then I reveal the red-waxed top bottle with the slanted label. Classic Napa Valley from a tough vintage has just shown up some the greatest wines in the history of Bordeaux. Vive la Californie!!
