Parker 99 points: When drunk with Henri Bonneau at his home, this wine was so remarkably young as to defy belief. A clone of the 1989-1990 blend, this structured, tannic, profoundly concentrated wine represents the essence of Chateauneuf du Pape. The huge nose of smoked herbs, olives, beef blood, and black fruits is intense. The enormous concentration, freshness, and superb balance are hallmarks of this classically profound vintage for Chateau...

The Story

The massive and powerful Réserve des Celestins is generally sourced from Bonneau's vines in La Crau, whose boulder-strewn plateau produces Châteauneuf's ripest fruit. Cuvée Marie Beurrier, Bonneau's more elegant wine, usually comes from clay, limestone and sandy soils.

Written Notes

We marched onwards with a Bloody Mary of a wine that had tobasco and Worcestershire aromas. It had that edge of maturity like the 1935 DRC, but it would end up being much younger. While clean and polished, the 1978 Bonneau Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Celestins didn’t deliver much pizazz. I have never been impressed with this vintage of this wine; I think Henri must have just missed this one, as Bonneau can make superstar wines. But in this superstar vintage, that was not the case (92).
