Vintage 2021

2021 Barossa Valley Vintage Report

Following two particularly dry seasons, many were hoping for Mother Nature to be much kinder, and mostly she was. Winter rainfall in 2020 recorded 148mm, the same as winter 2019, (22% below average). Written Notes

2021 was a superb vintage in McLaren Vale (and plenty of other regions) and the team had the opportunity to source some Cabernet from the famous Hickinbotham Vineyard in Clarendon, a northern sub-region of the Vale. As with her Yarra experience benefiting the Pinot, Kate has also spent time in the Vale at Wirra Wirra, ensuring her familiarity with top-notch fruit from the region.

The colour of this wine is a dense, deep maroon. Lots of dark chocolate notes here in a wine that is seductive, delicious and more than a little hedonistic. Fine acidity runs the length, which is most impressive. Just absolutely delicious. Anyone who thinks a warmer clime can’t make cracking Cabernet needs a glass of this to shatter such illusions. If you are a fan of McLaren Vale reds, and who isn’t, a case or two of this in your cellar is a must. Drinks beautifully now but will improve for four to five years and then plateau for many more. One thing – I love the new labels and they are good fun, but please don’t make the mistake of thinking that this is not a serious wine. 93.
