The Story

The relationship between Champagne Pol Roger and Sir Winston Churchill dates back to a providential meeting at a luncheon given by the British Ambassador to France some months after the liberation of Paris at which was served the sumptuous 1928 vintage of Pol Roger. Attending the lunch was the beautiful Odette Pol-Roger as well as the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, with whom she struck up an instant rapport. A friendship was born which co...

Vintage 2013

The Champagne harvest 2013– late, but potentially outstanding

It has been another strange year for Champagne, starting with a cold, wet winter, followed by a gloomy, chilly spring with a lot of rain. Vine development started two weeks behind the ten-year average, and never made up for that lost time.

Along the way came a hot dry summer, boosting fruit quality thanks to the most sunshine ever recorded in Champagne in July and August.

Written Notes

‘It is striking that Winston Churchill 2013 is now lighter and more shy at launch than they used to be in the past. On the other hand, they seem to end up very close to the older vintages after a few years of their own storage. This slow development with Verzenay as such a clear mineral-rich stringent protagonist is noticeable not least in the glass. Just like in 2012, the wine is much more impressive and rounded rich a few hours after opening the bottle. Then a little cautiously, the whole Winston bouquet appears in the form of baguette, dark chocolate, strawberry jam, olives, gunpowder smoke, black coffee and sweet gravenstein apples. Drink after 2028.’

“Bright lemon colour. The soft nose is a charmer, with vanilla-laden ripe orchard fruit and orange peel, but also some darker, spicier tones. There are both rich, yeasty notes and brioche layers and an elegant, crystalline quality to the fruit on the palate. Acidity is accentuated, which makes up for a more agile and linear Churchill than we are used to. The hallmark silkiness and concentration are there. This is a particularly elegant vintage, worthy of cellaring. As usual, the varietal composition is not disclosed but kept as a family secret. Dosage 7g/l”

Bright yellow with almost green hue. Opulent and rich yet refined with hints of Brioche, zesty freshness and fine blossoms. On the palate elegant with excellent depth and length, good mousseux and multi-layered finish.

“Pol Roger's flagship Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is fabulous in 2012. Rich, open-knit and seductive, the 2012 will drink well right out of the gate, although it certainly has the pedigree to age well for decades. Lemon confit, chamomile, dried flowers, mint, spice and a kick of brioche infuse the 2012 with notable textural richness and resonance. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous aromatic lift to round things out. The 2012 is classy and polished all the way.”

Inside Information

Churchill drank Pol Roger – lots of it. Its cépage has never been released but it is believed to be over 60 per cent pinot noir. 2013 was a good vintage, the acidity a highlight. Here it has been the foundation of the freshness and imperious length of a very great champagne, second only to the 2008. Drink to 2030 - James Halliday, 99 Points
